"Otherwise, are we really going to see a season pissed away over contractual regulations and restrictions for which the owners are likely already mapping out loopholes to circumvent?"

The truth of that pisses me off. The owners are using the CBA to save them from their own stupid greedy contract blunders.

Meh, I don't care about that comment. Of course the owners will look for ways to abuse the new system, whatever that may be. So will the agents and the NHLPA.

However, I am interested in Crosby's comments. In what way are the owners taking away all the players contract rights? I've seen modifications to existing contract terms under the proposed CBA, but I'm not sure what he's talking about. Reading his comments gave me a headache. He needs to be a bit more precise. The owners are trying to keep a players rights for longer. However, you will still become a RFA, you will still be able to negotiate that contract. You don't have to sign it. Limit it more than what they have today? Sure. Take away? Uh no.

I see little in the way of compromise from either side. You get the owners that want to shove everything down the players throat and they you get the moronic comments from Crosby. "Why would you want to change anything?". Basically saying everything is just peachy. I had an irrational dislike of Crosby as a player, I'm starting to dislike people putting a mic in front of him to talk about the CBA. Hey Crosby, if things weren't broke we wouldn't be where we are.

November 10, 2004... NHL cancels 2005 All Star Game.

The clock is expiring quickly on the 2013 @BlueJacketsNHL ASG.

I'm not a big fan of the actual All-Star game itself, but having one in Columbus is pretty cool and great for the city.

That said, I'd rather they go ahead and cancel this year's and hopefully we'll get it back in 2015. Even if this lockout ended tomorrow, I'm not really thrilled about celebrating the NHL and its 'stars' this year anyways.

At this point, I think the quality of players would undoubtedly be dramatically reduced. The marquee players would find a way to bail due to the compressed schedule and the chance to stick it to the NHL. It would probably be mainly players on ELC playing in the AHL right now. While I think that would actually make for a better game, I'd still prefer to just axe the game and wait for the next one.

I'm almost positive that it's been canned already. Haven't seen one advertisement for it since summer.

I have seen a few on FSOhio in the past month and it is still on the front page of the Jackets site. But IMO if nothing has happened by 12/1 there is no chance of it happening.

This killed me from yesterday's coverage.

Quote:
"One thing (deputy commissioner) Bill Daly and I agree upon is that when the moment is right the deal could be done very quickly," (Steve) Fehr said Monday during a panel discussion at the PrimeTime Sports Management Conference. "One days, three days or whatever."

Asked later if he agreed with that assertion, Daly replied: "I hope he's right."
The statement starts with Fehr saying that Daly and I agree on this, and Daly replies "I hope so."

There's no reason not to announce it if it were cancelled.

The advertising stopped because it's really not right to advertise something that is so uncertain. It seems pretty ethical to me, honestly.

November was cancelled on Oct 26. I imagine all December games get axed over Thanksgiving weekend (Friday 23rd). People in the USA will be distracted with the holiday and football, and the announcement wont generate much PR south of Canada.

I should be getting some refunds soon. Extra $2,000 should come in handy around Christmas...maybe take family to some place warm. I wasn't too excited to watch this team play this season anyway and planned to sell my ASG tickets at a price to help offset my season ticket expenses.

Reading latest news though, I'm feel more blame on owners. Last lockout was about "cost certainty", the owners got that. Then they start writing idiotic contracts to circumvent salary cap. How about allowing the "bonus" contracts, but paid later in the contract. Maybe a change the salary cap language to say that the average salary cap hit on contracts greater of:
  1. The average salary during the term of the contract; or
  2. The highest 3 years average salary paid during the first half of a contract's term for any contract 5 years or longer. If contract length is odd number, then league rounds up to include the salary of the odd year (7 year contract / 2 = 3.5, rounded up to 4)

So...if contract is 10 years in length, the league would compare the average salary over the entire length of the contract to the highest 3 years paid during the first 5 years of the contract.

A contract of:

Year
1: $7,000,000
2: $8,000,000
3: $9,000,000
4: $10,000,000
5: $10,000,000
6: $1,000,000
7: $1,000,000
8: $1,000,000
9: $1,000,000
10: $1,000,000
TOTAL CONTRACT $49,000,000
AVERAGE: $4,900,000/year
  1. Average salary during entire contract is $4,900,000
  2. Average salary of highest 3 years in first half of contract term is $9,666,667 (($10m + $10m + $9m) /3))

Actual Salary hit = $9.67 million

Opposite contract of:

1: $1 million
2: $1 million
3: $1 million
4: $1 million
5: $1 million
6: $10 million
7: $10 million
8: $9 million
9: $8 million
10: $7 million
  1. Average salary during entire contract is $4,900,000
  2. Average salary of highest 3 years in first half of contract term is $1,000,000 (($1m + $1m+1m) /3))

Annual Salary hit = $4,900,000

Then the only way that teams and player could maybe circumvent would be paying "bonus" on the first year of the last half of the contract.

1: $4.9m
2: $4.9m
3: $4.9m
4: $4.9m
5: $4.9m
6: $20.5m
7: $1m
8: $1m
9: $1m
10: $1m

So, the bonus could be there, but it'd be a back end bonus. Certainly, only attractive to players signing what they know as their last contract, but less attractive than the upfront bonus, so they may be more tempted by a 6 year contract for $36 million if it pays $8, 8, 5, 5, 5, 5. Less overall money, but more upfront.

Then it's a more neutral playing field and what sounds better to the player: $7.5 million per year with a lump sum at end over 6 years? Or $6 million per year with large amount up front? There's risk to player that may make the bonus a tougher sale...they sacrifice some income up front to get larger over all contract in the end and fewer would accept...but doesn't completely wipe out the opportunity for teams to work around salary cap and pay some bonus money. I think the team also gets a higher motivation level from player to play out contract. Obviously, this could be played with to adjust.

I felt from the beginning that the season was lost.
It will be interesting to see how much longer before they annouce that.
Last I saw they are not even talking by phone to each other. If they are serious about resolving this wouldn't they be meeting everyday??

I felt the season would be lost the second I heard Fehr came on board. Yes Bettman has been here for the others, but the combination of the 2 was a death blow waiting to happen. This is the most valid opinion from the whole lockout

Serious question. Can the Blue Jacket franchise survive a lost season? Will there be enough fans left to support a team in Columbus?

Yes...they're losing less money during the lockout than if there was a season and get more revenue sharing after lockout.

WBNS 10tv said Bettman told NHLPA they're taking a two week break in talks. That should kill ASG.

This should do it. After 60+ days of continuous 12 hour intense negotiating these guys need a break.
