Who is your country's most underrated athlete?

For Canada I would say Daniel Nestor. You never hear about him despite the fact that he is a

-Career grandslam winner
-10 time major champion
-11 time major runner-up
-4 time tour finals champion
-2 time tour finals runner-up
-Olympic gold medalist
-80 time title winner
-4th on the all time title list (4 behind 1st)
-Has been a number 1 ranked player in the world
-Is fifth all time for most weeks at number 1 with 108

oh wait he plays doubles it doesn't count

Jarkko will win the Helsinki Challenger this week. Book it.

He has had a really good career but has a terrible record in finals.

I don't know if Romania gets to count him or we do, but I doubt many Canadians have ever even heard of boxer Lucian Bute.

Helsinki Challenger yeah what a tough competition. He always melts in more important tournaments. I wouldn't call him Finland's most underrated athlete... not even close.

That was the joke.

He actually has done extremely well in his career for a player with his second serve. Nothing remarkable about his meltdowns and choking for a tennis player.

Jarrko actually just beat some guy named Struff to get to the finals at Helsinki. One can only conclude that his opponent was not the Struff that dreams are made of, though.

The most underrated Canadian athlete is Will Gadd, who is probably the best all-around extreme athlete in history. You'd never hear about him though because the sports where he's an elite participant (ice/mixed climbing, paragliding, river kayaking, rock climbing, and others) are either non-competitive (in the sense of television, rankings, etc.) or have competitive events that are mostly outside the public consciousness (Winter X-Games, etc. and most of that was in the early 2000s). His overall physical fitness would also put a lot of more celebrated athletes to shame.

Any hockey star. Neither Lundqvist, Karlsson or Landeskog got nominated(14 of them!!) to the best Swedish athlete of the year. Topped by Lidström or Forsberg never winning the award. That to me is being underrated by an entire nation if anything.

Clara Hughes? Won 2 bronze medals in the Summer Olympics for cycling. A gold, silver and 2 bronze in the Winter Olympics for speed skating. Only person ever, to have won more than 1 medal in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Tied for the most Olympics medals by a Canadian athlete.

Only time you hear of her is when the Olympics are happening.

Lång has the talent. But not the drive.

Mäkelä-Nummela is just stupid and arrogant *****. To put it mildly.

Hirvi is a good pick, not sure if he counts, thought he retired. Cool dude.

Individual awards are nearly always biased towards athletes from individual sports. It's just how those things work.

I'd say Mika Koivuniemi (Pro Bowling mostly in USA). This guy even got to throw a starting pitch in MLB game.

And Mika Immonen in pool

In Spain I'll go with David Ferrer. Most underrated tennis player too.

Ferrer has certainly been the key to Spain's Davis Cup success these past few years, but I don't think he's really underrated except by his most entrenched haters. Most tennis fans know what to expect from him: he's significantly better than the players ranked below him, especially consistency-wise, and significantly worse than those ranked above him.
