If anyone deserves it, it's Columbus. That being said, I don't really believe any team deserves the #1 pick.

The only rational argument included here is that they finished dead-last last year. Who was available - doesn't really matter, arbitary information. Their star player requesting a trade? Again no rational link can be made between that and supposed entiltement via the draft system. Made the playoffs only once? Again, not relevant. I am a Florida fan and we've made the playoffs as many times in the same time frame ; doesn't mean i think we deserve the #1 pick anymore than anybody else.

Medicore prospect pool? Their own fault through shoddy drafting and development system. Again, not related to the actual process and merits on how we decide who drafts #1. That is basically like someone complaining about not having a job because they are a moron, or a midget complaining that he isn't an NBA superstar because of genetics.

Edmonton followed by Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.

The only answer is Columbus.

how about a team that has a solid fan base that has struggled for years... how about Toronto? Really CBJ deserves a #1 pick over them? give me a break

It's shocking that as bad of a franchise as Columbus has been (even in their short history), they have only had one #1 overall.
or worse yet, your team completely blew it when they got to pick first. See Detroit and Claude Gauthier/Dale McCourt/Joe Murphy.

Although McCourt and Murphy at least PLAYED.

I don't think you understand what the term deserve means when applied to this situation/distrubtion system/question.

Then prove it.

And no, having more fans doesn't mean an NHL team as an entity warrants the merit of the #1 draft pick. The draft system is determined by results. How many fans you have is entirely irrelevant.

Flames or CBJ, IMO. Calgary because that team could use an infusion of young talent and because they suffer from always being good enough to compete without being good enough to make the playoffs and end up with mediocre picks and no post-season. CBJ because obvious reasons are obvious.

Its the Leafs for sure.

Getting MacKinnon would be the perfect feather in our cap and guarantee cup contention in a few years when our D-core develops.

Although Columbus does deserve a change in fortunes, I just feel it would be wasted with them because even if they win the cup, I don't think their fan base would grow that much.

If we're going the entitlement route, I'm going to say Anaheim deserves the #1 pick. The lockout is going to cost them the legend that is Teemu Selanne. It's only fair that they get an amazing prospect in return.

No team deserves to get the number 1 pick more than the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Jackets select Mackinnon

I think you underestimate their fans. A player like MacKinnon or Jones would be amazing for them, and it would draw a lot of interest.

Flames have never selected first.
leafs dont deserve it. Theyd probably trade it away for a one dimensional winger if they did anyway.

It could be worse. You could have had 3 first overall in 4 years, which should build you a contender, but end up with Daigle, Phillips and Berard. Instead you could have had Pronger, Iginla and Chara. That's where those draft rankings were though. It also sucks that when your team finally drafts in the top 5, inevitably, that draft stinks.
