Hmmm...I like that idea but we don't really deserve it. We aren't too far removed from a Stanley cup and our days of playoff dominance.

I'd say

Columbus

Toronto
Calgary
NYI

Then why give it to the Jackets?

The thread should be "why should your team get the #1 pick" becuase almost every bad team has had poor management.

When your team is badly run and is happy to go for eighth in your conference year after year like Calgary and Toronto, you don't deserve the first overall. Suck it up and rebuild by purging your team and finishing low enough to be in the lottery or get decent management in place to draft and develop from middle of the pack picks.

I do feel bad for the true fans of those teams, but not the delusional ones who laud Burke and Feaster or pump up their prospect pool year after year. It must suck as a real fan having to deal with so many fellow fans that live in an alternate reality.

The Ilses have picked very high so many times, they do not deserve that spot, IMO nor do the Oilers. I would have no problems with CLB or CGY.

you could say the Sabres deserve it, have always been in the mix and have lost alot of great players to free agency, have never caught a break, havent had a #1 pick in Perrault and havent really had a franchise player in quite along time. Have never won a cup and have one of the most loyal fanbases in hockey. Havent had a top 10 pick in almost 10 years aswell.

CBJ, NYI get a lottery pick basically every other year.

With the possible retirements of many players post lockout, the only deserving team is Detroit. Can you imagine them being a bottom tier team? That's just not fair.

If the best option is to try to lose, you should probably not be playing the game.
This whole mindset shows how **** the draft system in place is .

Well, the fans certainly aren't incompetent.

Err... some fans.

But really, we pay boatloads to watch a ****** product on-ice, but we're hooked. It would be nice to get what we pay for.

When your core and stars are old and you have a weak prospect pool, it's time to realize that trading vets for picks and prospects and rebuilding is a must. It isn't about tanking for first overall. It's about failing, but growing with your youth and building back to a contender. If your GMs have been smart enough to draft, develop, sign and trade to continually be in the top ten, than don't ever purge your ranks. If this isn't the case, your GM and fan base need to wake up to reality.

Personally I went with Columbus, but you can make a very strong case for Toronto, Calgary, NYI, and Winnipeg.

Given that the Leafs haven't been in the playoffs for so many years, who isn't?

Oh please. Does a guy named John Taveres ring a bell? It's unfortunate if you actually feel like the Islanders should get it.

I will remember the bolded part.
Ignoring the rest because it is still a terrible mindset that goes against everything "sport" means.

I'd love for Toronto to get it- but the Jackets need it. Can't help thinking they were dying for Yak all year

I don't see why a team deserves the number one pick just because they are consistently inept.
