The guy was a high end offensive defenseman in college (to the extent that even when he hurt his knee and couldn't skate, his team still kept him in the lineup solely so he could play on the PP), and it's really too bad we haven't seen it since he hit the AHL.
That's the difference between Sergei Zubov potential and Filip Kuba potential.

Let's keep things realistic here. Wiercioch was one of my favorite prospects in College and literally was near Karlsson after first year they were drafted. His development got hindered from multiple aspects.
A guy who can score 35 points and play solid two-way hockey will be a HUGE win if Wiercioch can develop into that which I believe he can. Hitting 40+ a couple times.
I like the Kuba comparison. Wiercioch has always had the tools to be a top-4 guy, it was a question of whether he'd fill out and whether his tools would translate to the pro game. The neck injury last year was a big setback on an otherwise mediocre campaign. Glad the kid's playing well so far this year, but he'll need to continue to play at this level if he wants to become an NHL regular.

Wiercioch is a BIG project and he's only 22. Yes, he had a bad injury but I believe if he works hard and brings out his offensive game, he will be a stunner. If he could have Mcdonagh-like developmental pattern.....

The puck to the throat last season really hampered his development.
Based on his play this season, I see him getting the call up over Boro right now.
Actually, it kinda did the opposite. He has really stepped up his game since he got back (from what I have seen and all accounts)... He was more in "statu quo" before the incident

"Kuba" shouldn't be taken negatively here though, Fil the Thrill was a pretty effective Dman at times.
Kuba had a better shot a few years ago, but he has scored several goals in the NHL (69). Kuba had a great career, I'd be thrilled if PW can reach half of Kuba's success in the NHL...

No, sorry that's why I said I was a little (ok, too) hyperbolic. Kuba (2009-2011) has traumatized me at times. But he bounced back just like the whole team (+/-: -26 to 26). I deeply respect the Kuba who played with Karlsson this year. I liked the Kuba who played in Tampa, jumping in the play, making smart passes.
But what really scared me is last year when PW didnt want to shoot. And this will slow down his development. But this year, it seems he's on the right path. He bulked up (about 210). He's agressive (maybe sometimes too much).
I know I'm ignorant and I may be annoying, but I would be thrilled if PW becomes Filip Kuba 2006-07.
Question friend asked me: How comfortable would you be in trading Weircioch for an immediate need.
Keep in mind we have Ceci (Right handed), Wikstrand (Left), Aneloski, Wideman and Boyle as PMDs

Not interested. He's coming off a down year and the return would suck. I'd consider a prospect for prospect deal, but those are incredibly rare these days.

We don't have a single prospect that skates like Bouwmeester. Bouwmeester's entire skillset revolves around his skating ability, while Weir's skating ability is an asset (especially for his height and potential filled in size), but his offensive abilities especially aren't centered about his skating, but more his puck abilities (passing, shot, stickhandling).

I see that Sergei Zubov comparison. The way he skates, the way he passes, the way he shoots.... Sorry that I'm kinda off, but I was stuck with a Mark Streit or Brent Burns who now I think are pretty good comparisons for Ceci at his absolute best.

I think the Drafting of Ceci, the trading for Methot and the fact Boro won "hardest worker" for a second straight year had more to do with motivating Weircioch.
He still refuses to shoot this year (for the most part I should say...considering his only points have been goals lol) It actually pisses me off how he doesnt realize what he does. He will try to thread the needle with a pass instead of taking a wide open slapshot. I know there were some comments agreeing with that statement from Kleinendorst last year, and it doesnt look like he listened.

I think Corey Pronman even said that last time he saw Wiercioch, he played as a 4th forward. He was being really agressive. I see he doesnt shoot enough but he's getting there...
Maybe in certain places, but I'd say Karlsson was more highly regarded in most places.
If PW is ever going to be a top 4 Dman in the NHL they'll need to make sure he's a high end Dman in the AHL before he comes up. Which will probably take him the season to earn. Some seem to think that PW is moving ahead of Boro for the spot....that'll be determined in camp and even then, it may still be Boro's.
I appreciate why some people believe PW has passed Boro.
While there is no questioning Boro's work ethic, he just lacks the skills to be much more than a 6/7 guy. For Boro there is no shame in being on the third pairing, which is where he will be if he continues to be a physical, hard working, low risk player.
On the other hand, PW has all the skills and with the added muscle on his frame has become a significantly better defender. PW's play has him headed to Ottawa sooner than later IMO.
Cowen's injury only enhances the opportunity for PW, and should Lundin struggle, then Boro or Benoit will be given an opportunity for the sixth spot.
