Because Weber should have won the Norris and Datsyuk isn't a top 5 forward in any sense of the word..

Crosby, Stamkos, Malkin, Ovechkin, Giroux .. I just named 5 forwards who are better than Datsyuk, that was sure easy

If more thought Weber should have won, then Weber would have won the Norris. Many argue Datsyuk's superior defense put him in the top 5, arguably on par with the latter two you mentioned.

This poll doesn't even make sense.

I would rather have Karlsson playing defense than Datsyuk, no question.

Would people rather have Karlsson playing forward than Seguin, Eberle or Gaborik?

Really makes no sense.

Players play offensively and defensively, regardless of their position.

Just because Karlsson is a defencemen doesn't mean that he's not better offensively than a ton of forwards.

Bobby Orr was one of the greastest offensive players, regardless of position.

Likewise, Bob Gainey is one of the greatest defensive players of all time despite the fact that he was a forward.

What? Datsyuk is winning by a ton, and yet you say the poll is stupid because its Karlsson and "not close"

Um how is this a landslide for Datsyuk? Must be a lot of non hockey players on this board if people are considering Datsyuk playing defense instead of Karlsson. Datsyuk would not do good if he played D for a few games, its a different animal. I don't care how talented Pavel is, defensemen have a certain instinct. I can see him stepping up on every opposing rush getting caught or just skating back right into his own net every opposing rush. Its a damn hard position to play.

Or maybe I just dont get this poll at all...

I do hope people know Karlsson won the Norris right.

You guys do know that, right? Do you know what the Norris is? I'm trying to make sure here cause some of you seem like you don't know what it means and who it's awarded to.

loooooooooooooooooooool

Its not a poll asking who would be a better defenseman, just who the better defensive player is

I guess the best way to think of it, would be who would you want out on the ice with 30 seconds left and your team up by a goal

As stupid as the question was itself (you just can't compare them, they're asked to do totally different things defensively) the results are even worse. A defenseman who just won the Norris worse defensively than a centre, LOL, typical HF Boards massive Datsyuk *****. How times a season does Datsyuk have to be the last man back? How many times a game does Karlsson?

It depends on who else I had, if I had two capable defensemen and nobody to take a face off then Datsyuk. If I had one or less defenseman then obviously Karlsson. It's the ridiculousness of the poll. Next up, better at preventing goals, Zdeno Chara or James Reimer? Practically an equally ridiculous poll.

I personally view it as more that Datsyuk is a better defensive forward than Karlsson is a defensive dman. If you asked me to choose one to put on the PK in their respective position, I'd choose Dats in a second.

Its not really that ridiculous, especially for the middle of the lockout haha

Like a poster said earlier, an average forward and Karlsson or an average defenseman and Datsuk.. Which would you trust more

Id trust Datsyuk more

Think of it like Datsyuk and McQuaid vs Caron and Karlsson

I imagine that was the idea of the thread. The intent being, of course, to point out that no one claims Datsyuk to be a poor defensive player based on his limited PK usage.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Datsyuk winning a "better offensively" poll too between the two. So much Karlsson hate on HFBoards.

He is the best of the bigger two way defenders yes ,but best overall which also includes smaller high skilled defenseman EK wins

They're both absolutely terrible, to play good defense, you need to be atleast 6"7 260lbs and give out hits like Scott Stevens.

Karlsson's defensive game is underrated because he plays D without much flash or physicality. He plays a positional game, utilizing his quick feet and hands to intercept pucks and force turnovers. He'll never be great at tying guys in the crease or pinning them perfectly against the boards - but he'll also probably never have to be great at those things because of said positioning + quick hands + quick feet.

I'd argue that if Karlsson were a forward, he'd be a Selke contender, too. He certainly has all the tools required of a Selke nominee (backchecking, large number of takeaways, and a great transition game, while still being a threat offensively). Don't think I could see Datsyuk in the running for a Norris as a defender, though.

Datsyuk in a walk. I'm still amazed that Karlsson won the Norris.
