I don't think you've watched Vlaisc play D. Keith is a better defenseman overall, no questions there. But defensively Vlasic is better.

As a Blackhawks fan I'd also rate Vlasic ahead of Keith defensively at this point.

Just looking at the playoffs Bryce Salvador and Matt Greene definitely deserve a spot on this list.

I don't think people understand this is top 20. That's very elite company considering there's 30 teams. There's some questionable calls yeah but you can't just throw every name on the list.

Everyone seems to want 3 guys from their own team. It doesn't work that way.

Duncan Keith is too low. As usual, the "tougher" and "grittier" defensemen win this category on HF. Not surprised.

Vlasic should be higher than he is right now.

Out of all the players in that list, you laugh at the player who should be a couple of spots higher?
The only thing that really stands out to me is Seidenberg being so high.

The logic behind that is since Chara is on his team, Seidenberg must automatically be underrated.

The same logic got Ryan Suter the #2 spot.

Suter is way too high. Pietrangelo, Weber, and Macdonagh are better than him. Suter played alongside Weber while in Nashville. Overrated for sure.

Garrison and Hedman on the list (even at 19 & 20) is laughable. Other than that I don't think it's that bad.

I know all the "stat guys" will spit on it all day and derive complex formulas to measure players defensively. But I guarantee that if +/- didn't exist, there would be a plethora of "stat guys" who would create it. It's a simple measure that fans can quickly understand and apply to what they've seen on the ice.

Is it flawless, and is it safe to use it as a reliable gauge in every instance? of course not, but used responsibly and understood for what it is, +/- is a fantastic stat.

Suter is better defensively than Weber, so this is right. I wouldn't say they are #2 and #3 in the entire league, but in relation to each other Suter is better.

Nothing for a shot blocking machine like Greg Zanon on this list?

A fantastic stat for fans who only follow hockey during a game that their team is winning. Borderline useless in determining anything of substance about a players performance.

Honestly, if we are talking about defensive defensemen then Mike Weaver should be on this list. What an underrated defenseman and player overall.

I would assume an ACTUAL Sens fan would know how to spell Karlsson.

+/- is a decent stat if you're only comparing it between players on the same team. It's extremely flawed and ridiculous to compare +/- between players on different teams.

Erik Karlsson is the number one defensive defenseman in the league. EK's defense is keeping the puck away from the other team and in the offensive zone. He not only did just that in his NORRIS winning season but almost averaged a point per game ...

+/-, like most other stats, has value if you know how to use it correctly. The difference is that it's really easy to use it incorrectly.
