Not a Jays fan but these moves look to me like "go for it this season" and blow it up next. With the Yankees in somewhat a transition and the Red Sox also (Balt and TB are also rans in bidding wars), this would be a great year for another team to load up and go after the AL east.
I would bet either way (successful or not) that there will be a huge dump of contracts at the end of 2013 much like Florida/Miami did after their runs several years ago.
Compared to the Hunter contract, this is a great bargain, even if Cabrera isnt nearly as good as last season suggests. Cabrera is heading into his prime as well
Does he displace Rasmus or will he play LF? He's probably much more valuable as a centerfielder.
Hunter is a far better defensive player
Hunter wins games with his glovework ,, Something Cabrera does not
Hunter has also never been a cheater ,, Something Cabrera has been
So I think paying a little more for Hunter is worth it

They're both corner outfielders. Defense at that position isn't as important, and Cabrera is no slouch. The guy was a CF, so his defense at a corner spot should be pretty good.
It's not just a little more for Hunter. 5 million/year is a substantial amount. Depending on what you think of Cabrera post-PEDs, I guess you could have an argument. I just believe that it didn't give him that large of a boost. He's around that age where players just start to put things together.

Why do you always exaggerate the truth?
5 million more?
The defensive gap isn't that big, and Cabrera is younger and has a lot to prove. If all things are equal, I like Hunter on a 1 year deal.. Fact is though, Cabrera is still in his prime while Torii is past his. I take Cabrera at 8m over Torii at 13m every day of the week.
wow what a steal the Blue Jays got due to people overreacting over steroids
Cabrera for 2 years is what I really wanted the Tigers to do(although Hunter's alright too)
Pretty much. As I said earlier, there is basically nothing about his numbers that would suggest PED use. Rather, his large bumps seem to come from luck as much as anything. But, even normalized, he's still a good player.
But if that wasn't that much luck, this could be a huge steal for the Jays. Be interesting to see how it plays out.
Free agents? Like Izturis and Cabrera? That's like getting to the food bank early and getting all the Kraft Dinner.
But they did sign BJ Ryan and AJ Burnett, who were top free agents and had a lot of suitors at that time. When was the last time the Raptors signed a free agent that a lot of teams wanted? And what does being an American NBA player have to do with not wanting to sign with the Raptors?

There's a bunch of reasons...not the least of which is the balance of power, there are about six or seven teams in the NBA that MIGHT and two or three that will PROBABLY win the championship...everyone else, forget it...so great FA talent go to those teams more often..
The top-5 free agents of 2012:
- Nash - LA Lakers
- Allen - Miami Heat
- Lopez - Brooklyn Nets
- Terry - Boston Celtics
- Felton - NY Knicks
So you've got three recent champions, and the two NY teams (Who have among them Melo, Amare and Deron Williams)...Why not Toronto? Because you can go to these teams instead..
The Raptors suck and have sucked for a while, so in a league with a lot of money and destinations, Toronto won't be high on most lists, hell they won't be in the middle of most lists...
Why do people roll their windows down when it is scientifically proven that won't save you any gas mileage?
Can you prove this?
Do we really have to go over this again? you can't quantify it, but PED's can increase stamina, weight training, help ward off injuries. All these things are unfair advantages compared to players not using them. It doesn't make your hand eye better or your pitch location, but it can make you a better athlete which can make you a better player.
I'm not on either side really. I don't believe they are magic pills that put you in the HOF but they do effect your body in ways that can enhance your play on the field.
