I didn't watch the Guelph game today... did anyone catch it? Wondering why Kosmachuk wasn't on the same line as Mitchell... It obviously hurt him as his replacement got a hat-trick.

Speaking of Mitchell, he was at our prospects development camp. I wouldn't mind seeing him at St. John's if we have room for him.

I have a question for anyone with the workings of NCAA vs WCHA players who have been drafted but done their schooling. I would like to know if there if there is a difference between the likes of Justin Schultz or Jake Gardiner, who have done college hockey time and opted to sign in a different market (oddly Anaheim drafted them both), vs our own Jacob Trouba. Is there, or should there be any, concern that that may happen that he will opt to sign elsewhere once he's done his post-secondary tenor?

I don't understand these sorts of things so if anyone can shed some light that'd be great.

First of all, Gardiner was traded so he didn't opt to sign in a different market. Secondly any prospect can opt to not sign with the team that drafted them, it doesn't only apply to NCAA. In Schultz case he finished his college eligibility and was left unsigned, therefore he became a FA. When it comes to the NCAA players there is currently as loophole in the current CBA regarding them opting out of college early and becoming UFA's, if they haven't been previously signed by their drafting team (Wheeler, Gregoire, etc). When it comes to players drafted out of the CHL, SEL, SM-liiga, Europe, KHL, etc, they become eligible to re-enter the draft 2 years after their initial draft (drafted 2010 left unsigned, re-enter the draft in 2012), if they were unable to sign with the original club that drafted them. So in short Trouba could potentially walk via FA if he decides not to sign with the Jets, but that could happen with any prospect that's left unsigned in the NCAA. Also, once a NCAA player has signed he's considered a professional and loses his NCAA eligibility. Of course all this only applies to the current CBA and could possibly be changed with the future CBA.

Hope that clears that up for you, if it doesn't, I'm sure someone else will come along and reword what I just said.

My hope is that they close that loophole in this CBA. I'd hate Trouba to pull a Schultz.

So would I.

Personally I think the Jets sign him to a contract before his 4 years are up at Michigan. I'm guessing they try to have him signed around his junior year (beginning or end). That allows him to have 2-3 years in college before turning pro (AHL, NHL).

Trouba CANNOT pull a Schultz, even under the current agreement. That loophole only applies to players who play a year of junior after being drafted, but before they go to college. It does not apply to him.

That being said, if Trouba plays out his 4 years at Michigan, he can wait until August 15th after graduating and become a UFA. But that is no different than any other player, for example CHL players can simply wait two years after being drafted and become UFA/re-enter the draft(depending on age).

Actually it does, thanks. These are the type of things I don't understand all that well so I appreciate your help. Also, I knew Gardiner was traded, I thought it was because he was unsigned (or a contract couldn't be reached), so that was an error on my part. Thanks for the help!

Missed this post. Good post, explains it well.

Just two things.
1) Schultz did not finish his college eligibility, he took the early opt out after his junior year, which again is only possible when the player plays a year of junior after being drafted.
2) Not every player that is drafted via CHL/Europe and chooses not to sign in the two year period goes back into the draft, it depends on age. I'd have to check, but I am 90% sure that players who are late birthdays (born after Sept 15) would not go back into draft if they are unsigned after two years, since they would be entering their 21 year old year the next year. And I know that any player passed over once or more, then drafted, then not signing after two years does not enter back into draft.

As you said though, with Trouba there is no more risk of him not signing than their would be of any CHL player, all players can refuse to sign and become UFA's. In fact it is less likely for college players since you protect their rights for a guaranteed 4 years, instead of 2 (remember that "loophole" only exist for players who played a year of junior after being drafted, so even for the Wheeler/Schultz/Gregoire's you hold their rights for 4 years no matter what).

U of M highlights from last night. The good news is despite the loss Trouba did not appear to be on the ice for any goals against.

He was on for one because his +/- was 0 at the end when he was +1 after the first(edit: should mean 2nd period )with his goal.

But I agree. Doing real good for a freshman.

Edit: confirmed, Trouba was on for the last goal:
NDM 4 - 1 6x6 EN Robbie Russo (4) (unassisted) 19:17
NDM (+): 5,14,15,18,25,G1 MIC (-): 8,10,12,20,27,37

Hard to not like the way his season has gone so far. Be great to get another World Jr. tournament in , and have him both play well overall and contribute offensively.

Scheifele has been out of this world the last few games. He is clutch and leads by example and can play with anyone. Major improvement over last year in skating, his strength and shot. Looking forward to seeing him in the NHL someday.
