12'/13' Marlies Part I|24-14-2-2|Colborne and Ashton stepping up?

He's also a former first round pick (just not by the Leafs). I think he deserves his own thread.

I'm a little disappointed but I can see him picking it up. He still does solid plays and has been one of the best forwards on the ice the past few games (aside from this one).

He'll become a solid NHL player once he learns to use his weight more and make hits.

Not much of a fighter... LOL How's the nose Joe? He's a BIG dude, and sometimes they take longer to develop. I think he'll become a reasonable 2nd line guy as his upside.

Doesn't matter that he can't fight, it was the thought that counts.

Good to see him toughening up. He'll never be a solid NHLer unless he is willing to be tougher- ie. DRIVE TO THE NET.

I really like him though.

Yeah he needs to be tougher.

I know he doesn't need to fight but can you imagine what a beast he'd be if he took up boxing?

I'm not all that high on him - don't think he'll amount to much.

Hope he proves me wrong - the skill is there.

He has the potential, just needs to flash the skill more and be tougher. His effort is there and he plays with a lot of heart thought which is a plus

Hope I'm wrong, but this guy doesn't scream NHLer to me.

He has some skill but IMO lacks drive and intensity, doesn't use his size, and I'm not sure his skating is good enough for the highest level either.

He doesn't have that flashiness of Kadri or other players but this guy will be good for us. Just be patient, he was really doing well on the ice.

Agree. Intensity is what I notice the most. There's no upper-gear for him.

He took quite a pop to the nose today in a fight.

All I want from him is to start to drive the net more. If he does he could be a really useful NHLer.

I think he's still gaining his strength back from the wrist injury and surgery. I think by mid season will see him producing better once hes gotten all his strength back

He's better than he was at the start of the season for sure, the broken nose was unfortunate though. He really look good on the ice tonight.

He got a few shots in then got tagged by that hail Mary shot by Dumont. He did ok and he was willing. Its all about showing up.

I think he's going to be a nice player. He has nice playmaking skills and he protects the puck well.

Just thinking back, what prospects of Boston's were available, other than Colborne?

If he is the 2nd line center with the Leafs in the future we're in trouble.

At best I could see him being a 2nd line winger because of his size.

If he stays at center he'll need to round out his game to include penalty killing. I really could see him becoming like Brian Boyle who put up very good numbers at the NCAA and AHL level but couldn't be a scorer at the next level so he became a defence first player who could chip in offensively (on a great contract as well).

I'm sure Hamill would have been available

I'm not 100% sure what was available, but Burke asked for 1 of Knight, Spooner, or Colborne. Chiarelli said no to first two. I'd imagine that any prospect other than those two would have been fair game since Colborne was our 3rd best prospect at the time. There really wasn't a better option...unless you wanted Zach Hamill .

I believe it was hamill or colborne, or could have also been caron.

I'm very hopeful that he becomes a 60pt center. I like him a lot, you just don't get his size paired with his skill that often. You can tell he's definately getting stronger, it's just a matter of burying the puck. I think he should play with Ashton and Frattin, would be a fantastic line.

Ashton-Colborne-Frattin
Kadri-Aucoin-Komarov

Both those lines would be able to produce very well.

It's way too early to pass any judgement on him, especially based on an injury filled season. It will take around 2 years at least for us to find out what we have in him, once he fills out, and gets used to his bulk. I, for one, and content to let him develop at his own pace.

P.S: Boyle only became an NHL regular at the age of 25, and hasn't contributed much until his next season. Joe is already ahead of Boyle offensively, he looked pretty good for his short stint in the big league at the age of 21.

I agree, two or three more seasons for big Joe to round out his game. Who does he remind you of more? Antropov or Pony.

I hope he isn't made of the same cheap glass Antropov was made from.

According to Burke, Colborne couldn't handle a puck until just before the season started, so he wasn't/isn't surprised with the slow start.

I just personally see Colborne's game translating better in the NHL than it does in the AHL. His passing and vision are off the charts. He's also not a terrible skater for someone his size. He has to use his shot more however.
