The Josh Hamilton sweepstakes

Figured it deserved a thread:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jo...on-sweepstakes

Quote:
The Mariners look like a possible new entry in the Josh Hamilton sweepstakes, people familiar with their thinking suggest.

The Orioles were identified earlier Wednesday as a potential landing spot for the biggest positional star on the free-agent market, which is just beginning to show itself.

The Brewers are a third team that has interest in the superstar outfielder, according to sources, though GM Doug Melvin has said money could be an issue for them.

i think anyone who goes term with what he wants is making a gigantic mistake.

money? fine. but seven years for a guy whose plate discipline left him last year? that's a lot to ask.

Agreed. Not only that but he's hurt every single year.

You'd have to imagine he offers more value to an AL team due to them being able to stash him in the DH spot.

Anything more than 5 years is a mistake. Out of the M's and O's, I think Baltimore would be a better fit than Seattle. Who knows though.

I think anything over three years is a mistake. Someone will go five or six though.

I'm glad nobody brought up the sobriety issue. The mainstream media is focusing on that too much and not that he can't play CF anymore and that he misses 50 games a year.

In an interview on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, Adams said, "Sometimes Josh is hard to figure out," and, when asked about Texas trying to re-sign the free agent outfielder, he said, "I'm not sure if it's in the best interest of the Texas Rangers or not."
Hm...

Hamilton can not stay healthy. He's bound to miss bundles of games every single year.

Bob Nightengale of USAToday.com reports that the Rangers don't plan to offer Josh Hamilton more than a three-year contract.

Every day you hope that Josh comes to the ballpark, shows up and plays like Josh Hamilton. Sometimes he shows up and you don’t know which Josh is going to show up at the ballpark. It’s nothing to be negative about toward Josh; that’s just the way it is. That’s what you get with Josh."

"When asked if he thought the Rangers should re-sign Hamilton he called it “a difficult question to answer” but did make it clear that he’d want Hamilton as a teammate “because I know what he’s capable of doing.”"

...In the end it sounds like Adams is basically thinking the same thing everyone else is. Good player and teammate, but sometimes because of issues, isn't always the same person.

Not sure about 7 years, that's awful long, but the O's would generally be a good fit for him. He could play left field, (with AJ and Markakis in CF - RF), and they could use some of the money that would go to Reynolds to sign him. A top 6 line-up of Markakis - Hardy - Jones - Hamilton - Davis - Machado is pretty damn stellar.

While I agree that the sobriety issue gets played up too much, it's a real factor when you're considering tying the next 5+ years of your franchise to a guy. Hamilton has relapsed before, and the entire culture of the clubhouse has to change to help make sure he doesn't relapse again.

You're right, his declining defense, injury problems, and startling lack of plate discipline down the stretch last year are bigger concerns. But the fact that he's a recovering alcoholic and crack addict has to factor into your decision to give him $100 million.

Also, while you don't want to make a huge financial commitment for 9 games a year, bringing in Hamilton would give Baltimore a huge weapon every time they visit the short porch at Yankee Stadium.

I don't disagree his occasional relapses aren't concerning, but he's had the money to buy crack for a long time now. But the mainstream sports media has sometimes discussed the sobriety issue to the exclusion of his other, far more concerning shortfalls, which you mention.

My rankings are:

1) Yankees
2) Orioles
3) Pot Luck

I honestly was fearing that Detroit would go after Hamilton before signing Hunter. The last thing the Tigers need is to have Cabrera relapse.

0% chance Yankees are getting Hamilton with their attempt at cutting the payroll next year. One headcase is big enough.

I realize that there is a rather small character limit on a tweet, but an executive of a Major League Baseball franchise should not be talking like a 13 year old girl.

That could have been an editorial attempt to fit the quote on twitter; I'm not sure if it was Armstrong himself.
