- D Austin Madaisky, who got squeezed out of Springfield by a plethora of defenseman on the roster, will have wrist surgery this week and is expected to miss three months. He had been playing with the Blue Jackets' ECHL affiliate in Evansville. Masaisky was a fifth-round pick (No. 124 overall) in the 2010 draft.

great job guys! uhg, knew it was a bad idea having dicer playing in the ECHL
Your use of the word "guys" makes it sound like us posters on HF were the ones who did this. I know you disagree with it, but don't take it out on us like last time when you had a hissy fit.

He also makes it sound as if something particular about the ECHL caused this, conveniently forgetting that Madaisky suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck playing in the WHL.

Yeah, players certainly aren't immune to injury in the WHL ... just ask Ryan Murray and his dislocated shoulder.
Again, homerism prevails over common hockey knowledge. Too bad, Kamloops is known for a great, wise, and welcoming fanbase.
Why did you guys send him to the WHL where he was obviously going to get his shoulder dislocated? First Madaisky and now this? You guys are totally letting me down here!
So you guys weren't part of the posse that rounded up Madaisky and shipped him off to the ECHL? Sucks for you. We had shirts made and went on trips. We played in some wicked jenga tournaments. It was a rocking good time. Too bad the kid got hurt though. Put a damper on the whole posse.

The club obviously wanted him to be available to Springfield in case of injury to others and/or the promotion of the likes of Moore, Savard, Erixon, etc. if/when the NHL season starts, and they obviously wanted him to get playing time while being available for call-up. You could say a guy like Ted Ruth "beat" Madaisky for a spot in the AHL, but Ruth isn't getting any playing time; seems to me like they value Austin more because they want him playing.
He got hurt. Players get hurt. Coulda happened in Kamloops just as easily. He's low on the depth chart but still holds value to us in the pro ranks. Having him in the dub or the ECHL both have pros and cons. Basically, **** happens. Deal with it.
Yeah, why challenge himself vs professionals when he can dominate kids younger than him again.
ECHL does not equal prfessionals. YOU CANNOT TEACH WINNING! he would have been part of a team that is winning! He would have been playin 23-25 mins a game in EVERY tough situation. that is invaluable. I am sorry but honestly, it makes no sense. NONE.

He could just have easily been hurt in the WHL. Not sure that the injury really determines whether this was a good or bad idea.

Not horrible. But not good either. If the lockout ends, Springfield could very well lose 3 defensemen. Madiasky would probably slide up to Springfield.
He could very easily have be sent down anytime. This injury obviously changes things, but you don't know for certain that he was going to be in Evansville for the rest of the season. Last year, the team sent Oliver Gabriel back to Portland in December...

Says the Kamloops fan. It makes tons of sense. The CBJ think he's too good for juniors, and want him to play in the AHL. He and Weber were odd men out after our D down there is stacked, but if/when the lockout ends two of Erixon, Moore, and Savard will be in the NHL, freeing up a spot for Weber and Madaisky to play. ECHL is full of professional worthy players, especially in a lockout year. Why are you so mad? You're team is doing fine without him. You're worried about his development? What are you, his dad? Blazers brass? Can't teach winning? well, that's what we're trying to build here in Columbus, a team full of people who hate to lose, and look at Springfield and how good they are starting. He'll be surrounded by winning pressure, much more than in a Junior league powerhouse.
He'll be playing in the AHL this year if the lockout ends. Do I think the CBJ love the decision to play him in the ECHL? No, but if they send him down to juniors he can't come back up, and he's too good for Juniors.

A list - of only some - of the "non professionals" currently suiting up in the ECHL for the lockout:
Joey Crabb
Nate Thompson
Brandon Dubinsky
William Wrenn - captain of WHL Champion runners-up Portland Winterhawks last year
Scott Gomez
Austin Madaisky - who you are so adamant is above the ECHL
Nathan Lieuwen
Kenndal McArdle
Casey Pierro-Zabotel
Former Blazer CJ Stretch
Paul Mara
Devin Setoguchi
Another former Blazer Brady Calla
BJ Crombeen
Toni Rajala
Tyler Bunz
This is just the short list - it doesn't include the countless other viable NHL prospects or currently playing in the league, guys who have spent some limited time there, or guys in the exact same situation as Madaisky, who could have gone either way - like former Everett goalie Kent Simpson. The lockout pushed everyone back a step, and by not even a close margin, Madaisky isn't the only example of a guy that could possibly play in the AHL, but simply is forced out by numbers.
He wasn't as good as the 6 guys that made the roster in Springfield. The only other options were to keep him and not give him any ice time, or to send him back to Kamloops. I say, give him the harder minutes in the ECHL - yes, ECHL hockey, against professional players, is harder hockey than playing against kids on teams like Vancouver, Prince George, or Victoria on a weekly basis. Remember: the ECHL is made up of players who were good enough to move on and play hockey after juniors. It's weeded out the pluggers, and is mostly made up of the smaller guys that were so good in juniors - like Colton Yellow Horn, Justin Shugg, and even aforementioned CJ Stretch.
As has been mentioned above: If the Jackets had sent Madaisky back to Kamloops, he would have had to play out the entire season there. He would not be eligible to call back up to the AHL; they had to make the decision on what was best for his development path, and obviously they felt he was ready for pro hockey.
