He looks very confident with the puck this year. I've seen the Steelheads a few times this year and I've yet to see him turn the puck over in his own end. This used to be a real problem for him. But he's skating himself out of jams and making smart decisions with passes. He had a secondary assist on Smoskowitz's second goal, and scored by pinching in and pouncing on a loose puck near the crease while on the powerplay. Defensively, he was terrific. Nearly all of Mississauga's defensive players shone today, as Erie had a real tough time mustering the energy to keep possession in the offensive end.

Thanks for your thoughts on DeMelo!

I've watched the Steelheads quite a few times this season and I agree with you, DeMelo's game has continued improved and it's mostly because his decision making looks to be much better this season.

On a side note, I still like what I see in Riley Brace. I'm not so sure he has much NHL upside but the Sharks org got a good look at him at development camp and maybe they'll look at him for the AHL roster again next year.

DeMelo wearing #2 for team OHL (white)

actually just saw him make a nice pass through the neutral zone.

Also worth watching is #16 for team OHL, Connor McDavid. He's the prohibitive favorite to be 1st overall in the 2015 NHL draft. He's only 15 years old, playing in the OHL thanks to being granted 'exceptional player' status (the 3rd such player to earn the status since it was introduced. The other two were John Tavares in '05 and Aaron Ekblad in '11)

I haven't kept myself updated on Sharks prospects, but I happened to watch the Czech Republic - Russia game today and happened to hear that Hertl was playing. It's tough to say anything about his role as I only really saw one period, but he was playing with Nedved for at least a little while. Tlusty (2G), Nedved (1+1), Pavelec, Koukal (2A), Petruzalek (2A) and Plekanec (1G in 1GP) were some of the key players on the team as they won the four nation tournament.

These were the ten youngest players (YYYY-MM-DD) in the tournament:

I managed to catch a few minutes of each of the games, so I can confirm Hertl was playing and getting a semi-regular shift. Didn't really stand out much. Youth really showed. No big deal, good experience.

Hertl was very good throughout the tournament. Strong on the puck, quick hands, very responsible defensively. He was playing on the 4th line most of the time, got promoted up to the 1st line with Nedvěd and Tlustý for the last period today.

Hey Kirby, do you have any idea what's up with Nieto's production? I can see that he's leading the team in shots, but he's really not putting up the counting numbers he should.

The Nieto line started out as the top line but the Megan, Hohmann, Rodrigues line has been super hot and is now getting top PP time. Some of Nieto's current cold streak has been due to playing with O'Regan, it took some time for chemistry to really develop and they are still feeling it out. Also, Nieto is playing the physical, dig the puck out of the corners type game and setting it up for the skilled but softer Gill and O'Regan. The rest is just puck luck, he's getting it in the slot but needs to get a few to get his grove back.

I finally got around to watching the Erie Otters/London Knights game that I recorded weeks ago. My thoughts, in case anyone is interested.

I love Chris Tierney. If you look up his stats right now (10 points in 19 games in the OHL as an 18-year-old), you'd be extremely disappointed. But from what I saw it was hardly indicative of his play. He had a primary assist on a nice wrap-around play where another dude banged it home, but he had several zone entries where he'd dispy-doodle around the defenseman and get a shot on goal. Obviously Erie is a poor defensive team, but he's got great hands and seems to be a smart player with decent size and good top-end speed. The thing I most disliked about Tierney is that he seemed to float a lot when the puck wasn't near him. Also, I don't think he got any PP time at all, which was baffling. FWIW, Connor McDavid (2015 eligible phenom) looked like Jesus on skates in the first period, and then the coaches assigned him to Tierney and McDavid was relatively quiet the rest of the game.

I would greatly enjoy having the NHL back.

OHLSteelheads @OHLSteelheads
@ddems2 picked up his 100th OHL point (including regular season and playoff games) on @Burny95's goal. Congratulations Dylan!

DeMelo now has 19pts through 20 games and 2 periods this season.

ESPN writer also had some good things to say about Demelo as well after watching some of the Super Series:

Quote:
D Dylan Demelo
San Jose Sharks, Rd. 6, 2011/Mississauga
Demelo is quietly becoming a player that Hockey Canada will have to consider for its World Junior roster. Not tall (6-foot), but very strong, Demelo plays a simple, sure game and does so with intensity and smarts. He is very much improved since his draft year. "KISS" (keep it simple stupid) hockey is a staple of defensive development, and this defensive D-man is simply effective -- and far from stupid.

If you're interested in watching some Sharks prospects play, Michigan (Lee Moffie) vs. Notre Dame is being televised today at 4:30PST on CBS Sports. It should be an entertaining game.

Tomorrow on NBCSN is Harvard (Colin Blackwell, though I believe he's injured) vs. Cornell (Joakim Ryan) also at 4:30PST.
