I can't understand how that is in any way effective advertising. All I end up doing is clicking through them as quickly as possible and the ones I am forced to see (i.e. insanely persistent popups to the background) make me just straight up hate whatever product is being shown with the fury of a thousand suns.
I would say as a consumer, I am roughly a million times more likely to buy something if it shows up in a basic side bar ad than one that tries to hide from my trying to close it.
