I'll venture to guess the large majority of runs he gave up were in these scenarios. He is a good closer though when the game is on the line. I think once in a while you can call on your closer for 3+ out saves but not over the course of an entire season. The innings just add up and could be costly at the end. That's why you need a reliable setup man. I like Papelbon the player, I just don't like the contract. I don't believe in giving relievers long term contracts especially 30+.
Just like most closers. Statistically speaking, many, many closers have vastly different stats in non-save situations. Lidge, Rivera, etc. The statistics are all out there if you just google "closers in non-save situations", you'll get dozens of stat-based articles illustrating the point.

Now, to Papelbon... he's definitely overpaid. No question about that. However, I'd rather overpay some and get production than underpay and end up with what we did in the 8th inning. Clearly, we need to get better there for next season.

Toronto is getting serious. I guess they figure with the Maple Leafs out of the way, the Raptors sucking the proverbial you know what, people will flock to the Blue Jays.

Epic post on mlbtraderumors.com

Good for him. Guaranteed playing time and gets to likely be one of the faces of their franchise again.

We'll be able to trade for him in July if we're still in it

Yep same here. The guy was a true pro who never dogged it.

Darin Ruf's magical mystery tour is still going strong. The slugger is currently spreading his home run gospel in Venezuela, where he leads the winter league with 10 home runs in 120 at-bats and is fifth with a .942 OPS (.258/.368/.570 slash line).

In fact, the locals are starting to talk about the potential of Ruf breaking the single-season record of 20 home runs set by Baudilio Diaz in 1979-80. Problem is, Ruf isn't sticking around for the whole winter ball season. He's scheduled to return to the United States this week, at which point he will enjoy Thanksgiving with his family and grab some rest after a long season.

Here's an article from El Nacional in Venezuela in which Ruf says that the possibility of breaking Diaz's record probably isn't enough to convince him to return for the second half of the winter league season.

To paraphrase the article, Ruf doesn't think about the record, and while he would love to stick around long enough to pursue it, his number one goal is to play every day as a left fielder in the major leagues, and to do that he needs to get some rest after a long season.

Interestingly enough, Diaz, who went by 'Bo,' played for the Phillies from 1982-85, hitting .256/.308/.402 with 36 home runs. His best season came in 1982, when he hit .288/.333/.450 with 18 home runs in 525 at-bats. He also had an epic mustache:

He has shown a pretty natural progression and, if he were 5 years younger would be considered amongst the best prospects in baseball. However, given his advanced age, he'd have needed to have been ridiculously dominant to get recognized. 2012 was that ridiculous year.

To me, it's not a question of the power. He's at least a 25 HR a year guy at the MLB level. However, where he will be for average and whether his defense be enough are the questions. If we had an opening at 1B (I wonder if the Red Sox would take on Howard?), Ruf would be an absolute no brainer there.

It's exciting that we have a right-handed offensive player regardless and we all get to pray that he's Matt Holliday-lite.

His doubles turned into HRs last year. He had good numbers before that, he just lacked the power to be considered a legit 1B prospect.

anyone have an update on how things are going for him defensively in left? adjusting well or will it take awhile? how about his arm?

Reports out of Venezuala (limited showing; 13 games in OF) suggest he can be an average outfielder. Hasn't looked lost as some feared he might and appears just adequate enough to play there defensively. Probably not that dissimilar to former Phils like Pat Burrell. Ruf's arm is ok. I would describe it as physically capable (he's actually played 3B and pitched in a combined total of 5 games since 2010), but lacking in technique. Accuracy from the outfield will take some work.

Wouldn't shock me if the Phillies have him on a diet/workout this offseason to slim him down a bit and try and give him a little more mobility in the OF. A CF with range wouldn't hurt either.

The Phillies added May, Pettibone, Martin, and Collier to the 40-man protecting them from the Rule 5 draft. Left unprotected were Julio Rodriguez, Jiwan James, and Leandro Castro among others.

I like Ruff's story and all, but he isn't the second coming - he is a defensive liability platoon bat against lefties. Nothing in his minor league career (even last season) suggests otherwise, imo.

Ruben needs to learn some fiscal responsibility, sign a cheap, defensively strong CF stop gap and let Ruff/Dom/Mayberry sort it out with some platoons in the corners.

Edit. I wonder what Jason Bay would realistically cost... can't imagine much.

Bringing Vic back or going after Pagan for moderate term would be cheap enough for me. Just no long, huge deal to Bourn, Upton or Hamilton and I'll be okay.

I was talking with a Twins fan the other day and he was talking about moving Span. I offered KK (since they are really hurting for pitching - only 2 ML SPs on the roster atm, iirc) and he was pretty happy with it.

And before this turns into the obligatory KK bash-fest, he is an above average, cheap #4/5 in the major leagues.

Kendrick would probably do pretty well in that ballpark, but Span would fetch a lot more than KK.

Meh. Hamilton is great and all, but he is one player I really worry about the off-field issues, especially in Philadelphia.

27th is actual memorial Monday. The first 2 games are in boston 27 28 final 2 in PHI

so we can do many ways.

we can go for 1 game or 2 which would require 1 night in a hotel or 2 if some leave on wed.

just wanted to know if any of you guys want to go.

Little advice needed. I'm coming to Philly in April to watch some baseball and hopefully some hockey if they can come to an agreement. I am wondering where in the city I should look to stay. Keeping in mind getting to the major sight seeing locations, easy access to the Stadiums, decent restaurants and public transportation. Thanks.
