I'll say that i think batting average with runners in scoring position in games decided by under 3 runs past the 7th inning is the most important thing to determine clutch play. no one ever calculates something that is that specific. yet perhaps it will tell a story...
Thanks for chiming in Mr. albom.

You need to also understand WHY Sabremeticians emphasize OBP. Of all of the "major" stats, OBP most closely correlates to run production. i.e., the teams with the highest OBPs overwhelmingly tend to score the most runs.

Stanton hasnt had to face deep rotations in the NL, more often than not hitters have a difficult time adjusting to the AL.

Also compared to what the jays have up, bogaerts, middlebrooks and salty was way more value then Henderson Alvarez and company. If that's what the marlins wanted from the sox, it's obvious they lowered their price for toronto
Not a great example. Thats a VERY short 17 game sample. A lot of factors went into his 17 game numbers. Its "always" far easier for pitchers to have success against a line-up, team or league the first time around, than it is for batters to do the same. And in addition Sabathia has had 10-12 game stretches in the AL with the Indians and Yankees that have been very similar to the numbers he put up with the Brewers.

How many deep rotations are their in the AL, as compared to the NL? I would put SF, Washington, Atlanta, Cinci, Philly, Dodger, Cards as part of the top 10 or 11, along with TB, Oakland, CWS, Detroit!

Hamilton would be awesome with the right deal/safety valves in his contract.

209/89? Lotta years, but a pretty good average. I'd do it.

Tigers working on signing Stephen Drew to play SS then would trade Peralta to Arizona or Boston

Anyone interested in Peralta?

If the Red Sox could move some of their bullpen surplus for Peralta, absolutely. Otherwise, I'm on board with Iglesias.

Sign Hamilton to a 5 year deal with a 1 million base salary and then 14 million bonus for staying clean each year, if he isn't clean he still plays for one million for the next year, then retested. Is that legal?

Despite this being in the Red Sox thread and in a conversation about Josh Hamilton, when I read that I was thinking it was about Dougie.

It would have to be more like $20-$25 million in bonuses.

even if the contract were legal.

even with your bonus money idea.

why does he sign that contract? someone will give him a guaranteed 130+ million over more years which gives him security. why would he want to play in boston, which has successfully run two managers out of town in as many years, had four pitching coaches in as many years, and go through a possible rebuild in a city where his every movement is going to be scrutinized...and for the possibility of making 20 million dollars?! if the pa even allows him to a sign a contract that is contingent on him passing drug tests to be more than double the league minimum.

what about alcohol? what about energy drinks? what about chaw? all of these substances are legal. i understand writing a clause in his contract wherein he has to stay off the h. i'm sure that's sop in contract writing. but i'd have a hard time buying that hamilton would even entertain a contract wherein he has to be tested to possibly earn what the market has dictated that he's worth.

we just unloaded a couple of horrid contracts, can't see Cherington giving Hamilton a monster deal and putting us back in the hole we were just in.

Hamilton would be worth it. If we can get him signed and make some moves to change up the pitching rosters, we'd be looking alright.

Also keep in mind they didn't want to move Agon he was just a means to an end. So they aren't against all big contracts just the ones that never should've been made in the first place (Carl Crawford).

Only reason he was moved was to get rid of Crawford and Beckett. His HR numbers were down but he still drove in runs at a great pace.
