I remember Peter Chiarelli has said if Kessel was given an offer sheet they were going to match. Do you think he was serious about that and thought if a trade is worked out it's better if they get two 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick, instead of 1st, 2nd, 3rd round picks in the same draft from not matching an offer sheet.

Kessel because it just wasn't what Toronto needed at the time of the trade. Kessel and Seguin are about equal right now and Hamilton would be huge. Imagine if Toronto had Hamilton and Rielly as Juniors both right now.. Wow, scary future top pairing.

And how was a shoot first C what CBJ needed at the time? CBJ wasnt any closer to being a playoff team then the Leafs were at the time the deals were made.
Its arguable they traded away the pick (Couturier) which became EXACTLY what they needed most ~ a pass first C to play with Nash.

Courtier was not expected to be available when the jackets were picking remember that. And why is there no love for Jack Johnson? His numbers have done a complete 180 since arriving in columbus. Also we have no idea what LA's pick could be, and most likely wont for awhile. I personally wouldnt have made the first trade, but I have some faith in JJ and some of the other newly arrrived players to take the reigns.

The Maple Leafs still have Jake Gardiner for their Defense and he's just as good as Hamilton. Plus Gardiner already has NHL experience and could look really good playing with Morgan Rielly.

So it's ok for Columbus fans to say they had no idea Courtier would be available when it was time for the 8th overall pick. However Toronto fans are still reminded how Dougie Hamilton was still available when Boston selected with the 9th overall pick.

The Leafs didn't trade away 2 firsts and 2nd for Phil Kessel and Jake Gardiner so that's irrelevant. They could have had Gardiner, Hamilton, and Rielly all. A very promising D-unit. Yeah they still have a good looking future D unit with Gardiner and Rielly and a few of the other guys with potential but with Hamilton it would have had the potential to be Rangers-good.

Yeah and Burke should have known his team would finish 29th overall and that Hamilton would be available 9th overall. Blah, blah, blah.
The Leafs have an All Star winger to show for it. CBJ has a lot of question marks
I took kessel 3 years to get those kind of numbers, and Johnson has played a few months Columbus. This would better be examined a few years from now, when we know how well it turned out for Columbus.
And how about comparing Kessel with Toronto and Carter with Columbus. It always amazes me how Phil Kessel doesn't exist in the "Kessel Trade".

Still the fact is Courtier feel to where Columbus was originally supposed to pick had they not made the trade for Jeff Carter. So because Toronto fans can't claim we had no idea Dougie Hamilton would fall to Boston and we don't use it as an excuse, Columbus fans can't complain about the same thing.

Of course you do because then you can ignore the huge win it is in that regard to Toronto. You're biased. Of course you have to compare Kessel finishing 6th in league scoring with Bozak as his centre and 3 straight 30+ goal seasons compared to the bust Carter was in Columbus.
