How does it not sound like some progress. The PA is conceding on some things, whether it be considered large or small.

No surprise Fehr wants the NHL to honor the contracts past 2 years. The make whole was for 2 years. Fehr dropped his demands by $200M. He wanted $590M. Now its $390M. From: @mirtle
Sent: Nov 21, 2012 10:50a

Last month, NHLPA listed $592-million they wanted made whole over the next five years: $231-mil in Year 1, then $162m, $97m, $65m, $37m

I don't see any possible deal being made that guarantees players the money they would have earned this season.
If they play 2/3 of the season, than perhaps there is a way NHL will pay players the full 2/3 of their salary owed, but if players are insisting on full face value of contracts there cannot possibly be a deal.

Have we gotten beyond that and I missed it somewhere?
This rumor was never founded. The PA expects their cut to be prorated based on games. Their numbers were for a full share simply for ease in accounting.

I don't want to come off as an authority, so if it at one time was a union demand i apologize. I have read that at this time the union expects a pro rated salary this season.

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun
Fehr says both sides will reconvene at 1 pm ET

Chris Johnston Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris
The NHLPA expects a response from the NHL on the new proposal this afternoon.

Tim Panaccio ‏@tpanotchCSN
Break in talks. Fehr says new proposal is percentage based and two sides are now $189 million apart from almost $1 billion apart.

Dan Rosen ‏@drosennhl
Fehr says the NHLPA gave the NHL a proposal that moves in the League's direction.

Dan Rosen ‏@drosennhl
Fehr acknowledged that the proposal was based on dividing HRR on a percentage base.

Tim Panaccio ‏@tpanotchCSN
Fehr says NHL now has to move toward them. NHL wants to revue it

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice
Fehr said NHLPA moved in owners' direction and estimated they are $182 million apart over union's five year proposal.

Pannacio corrected himself. It's $182 million the two sides are apart.

Seems like a realistic proposal the PA put forward. Hopefully the NHL responds in kind.

Sounds like good news. Although, I've been saying that for a while now.

They don't sound far apart. Frankly, I view this proposal from the NHLPA as optimistically as I did the NHL's first 50/50 offer.

Think Gary might dismiss this as another negotiating tactic. I don't know if it would make sense, but I could see Gary coming out and saying that they still believe the two sides aren't seeing eye to eye. Especially with the PA coming out saying this is as good as it's going to get.

Could just be my over-pessimism though. I've bought into there being no hockey this season to avoid the disappointment if/when that does happen.

Hoping for other news, obviously.

I understand it is a 5-year plan the NHLPA has offered? Looking forward to the 2017 lockout!

PA's proposal is 5 years. I believe the previous ones from the NHL were 6 or 7 years.

Isn't this the make whole that they are discussing?

NHLPA offer apparently does include player contracting. Could make for a fascinating day.

If the new proposal includes linkage, the NHL has to give the PA more of the make whole back. I've been pro-owner throughout but the PA is finally stepping up here.

The NHLPA's only move on contract rights was a proposal on eliminating backdiving contracts.

Based on the math that's what it seems but there hasn't been much clarification about it.

If you're asking about the years, that's how long the CBA would be. No PA proposal has been longer than 5 years.

An integral part of the players’ proposal is $391-million in “make whole” money over the five years, which is substantially more than the $211-million the owners last had on the table but less than the $592-million the NHLPA had previously asked for.

“About as good as we can do,” Fehr told reporters in attendance.
Does that mean they have to agree up to the comma?

Solid move by the PA in my eyes, at least according to what we know right now.

Proposal is well within NHL's framework. This is now resembling an actual negotiation.

Now the ball is in the owners' court. I don't expect them to accept but I expect a good counter. And from there will determine if we have a season.

Think the biggest changes are 1) agreement on using percentage of HRR 2) agreement on backdiving contracts and 3) what contracts in AHL...

Would count against cap -- but not necessarily HRR.

So Ferh and NHLPA doesn't want public to see full offer unlike NHL

Sounds like this is a smokescreen ,,, I imagine there will be major issues with how Fehr defines HRR and other financial aspects

Or maybe they're negotiating in good faith....

If NHLPA releases proposal publicly, have to think it's most likely because it wants you to see what the NHL is rejecting.
