A wise move. I think these sessions they're in now where the NHL is asking the NHLPA for a full written proposal of everything they want (and NHLPA supposedly offering variations of same sometime today) is the last chance. The owners will sooner end it all this week (if things go badly) than say "we're OK having a 35 game season and playoffs, so let's keep negotiating into January" IMO. Fehr better have his **** together this time with "all the numbers run" and everything in black and white. I have a feeling if he keeps playing his games, Bettman will just pull his dewsh card and call the season.

Yep. To quote the great Tree Beard (in consideration of the upcoming Hobbit movies):

"Side...?? I'm on nobody's side... because nobody is on our side."

Owners = Sauron, NHLPA = Sarumon

Where's Darren Pang. He might be the closest thing fans have in all this to a powerful Hobbit.

Dwarven mithril.

I've seen a few episodes of that show. They come up with some twisted **** on that network.

But I fully understand how a Swansonian American would not be willing to acknowledge comments derived from The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings. Too many wizards, not enough meat tornados. Myself, I have been charged and found guilty of being a LotR / Hobbit nerd. Probably if I'd read them as a kid I wouldn't be as big a fan (wouldn't be as new to me), but you gotta admit there's a level of story telling there and production quality that's unrivaled in most of the cinematic abortions they call "good movies" these days. I love special effects that don't look like special effects.

Meantime, Donald and his minions will allegedly submit their "full proposal" tomorrow.

huge tolkein fan. I am a little wonderous how the Hobbit can be stretched to 3 movies. Certainly it can be 2, but in Jackson I'll trust in this.

LOTR I was a bit nervous to see as I didn't want something to spoil the books I had read as a kid, he batted it out of the park. In some ways Jackson's vision was a bit better.

I think the plan to stretch it to 3 was using extra stories / materials Tolkein added to the appendices of one of the books, so the first two movies should cover all of The Hobbit and the third will be a bridge between the two trilogies possibly.

Perhaps it's about the ancestors of the only "evil Hobbit" ever verified in the historical record.

Pre-adventure, ring segment, Smaug segment. That's how I see the trilogy playing out.

Made in New Zealand Actually, I wouldn't mind taking a weekend trip up to Wellington to see some of the visuals that Weta Workshop have created to celebrate the forthcoming premiere. An example below

I'm not sure I agree just based on the names of the movies.
1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
2. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
3. The Hobbit: There and Back Again

It seems to me the one with Smaug in the title would deal with Smaug

Well Bilbo and Gandalf did have adventures on the way home that were kinda briefly mentioned in the Hobbit (might have been told in another book IDK) so maybe they'll cover some of that.

Im suprised the trek through Mirkwood doesnt take up its own movie.

This thread is a lot more interesting when we are discussing LOTR and The Hobbit.

Meeting has started. Players may move off of hard numbers and use the percentages off of HRR.

TSN saying it's expected the first two weeks of December will be cancelled today, regardless. Not surprising, given how close we are. Would be tough to finalize an agreement, start camps, get all the arenas set up etc in 10 days.

Meeting today has gone well so far.

NHLPA offered a proposal based on HRR as a driving force and Fehr believes they are only $182m apart on a 5 year deal. Not sure if that's on Make Whole or the Whole thing but encouraging.

NHL is looking at the proposal and they'll meet again at 1.

So counting 2012-13 as year 1, next lock-out should take during place the 2016-17 season? Gotta mark my calendar.

The problem/question is, is that $182 mil on top of the already proposed Make-Whole the NHL has offered? If it is, then the two sides are 393 mil apart.

Yeah, presume so. Gotta think that the NHL would push for another year or two though and string out the difference there.

Not sure where the $182m is. We'll find out soon.

The response at 1/1:30 will, I believe, be pivotal to whether we have an NHL season. If Bettman & co. come out and outright dismiss the NHLPA's proposal (which, I think goes further than I thought Fehr would ever go) I don't think we'll be seeing an NHL season. If they start negotiating off of this and the NHL relent's on some of their contract demands, hopefully this can get settled pretty quickly. Hope for the best, expect the worst...

Just to further add to what I said, Matthew Barnaby has been talking to a player who stated that if the NHL turns down their proposal the players will shut down talks.

Whatever they decide I'm not in favor of these BS 5 year proposals. It's like neither side cares if there's a lockout every 5 years. TRY THIS *******S: make it 10 years!

The financial gap in CBA talks is on make whole payments. NHLPA asked for $393M today. League has previously offered $211M.
This isn't going to go anywhere...

It's a huge step. The PA went from a hard number on make whole to a percentage of revenue over a period of time. I think the owners can meet them halfway.
