Nothing wrong with paying contracts signed. Nothing wrong with easing into the 50-50 ONLY by fact that existing contracts are paid. As Bettman loves to point to other professional sports leagues and what they have done in CBA's, why is the NHL the ONLY professional sports league where a contract signed between owners and players a point of negotiation?
Probably has something to do with the fact that the NHL is the only league that currently has all of the above:
-a cap
-guaranteed contracts for the duration
-no limit on # of years for a contract
These players have it good. Its one thing to fight for the status quo - its an entirely different thing to convey that the league is trying to "take everything away"

Not that I am a capologist, but baseball has a limit on years? Yes, the NHL is the sole sport with a hard cap and guaranteed contracts. That is not something that is compatible. The NFL is the sole other sport with a hard cap, but have non-guaranteed contracts. Off course, putting the NFL into any discussion makes no sense to begin with.
The owners got a 24% rollback on salaries and a hard cap last time. In fact, they got everything that they wanted. The loopholes that are being talked about? Being exploited by the same owners that are now actually arguing with the players about it. It is the OWNERS who circumvent the cap. Why is this even being put on the players shoulders?
You got everything you wanted 7 years ago. And became the only professional sports league that has canceled an entire season. You got your do over. You have crowed about the health of the league and record revenues. And, days after signing HUGE contracts, the pad lock goes on, and suddenly the owners are crying poverty? Give me a break. The players lost a season so that the owners could get EVERYTHING that they wanted. And now? Now they want another do-over? Know what happens when the next CBA is over? The same exact thing. I understood the owners last time. This time, I believe that it is a pure money grab. Nothing else.
What other professional sports league has a group of owners that has essentially demanded two do-overs from their players? And again, this is after only years and months spent telling everyone just how healthy the league is and how it is growing and how much profit it is taking in. And only days after signing players to contracts.

Agree. Completely. I was merely pointing out how ridiculous all this 50/50 crap is. It's about "how" they get there and when. The PA could agree to get to 50/50 by year 10 of a new deal and they'd tell you they've agreed on 50/50.
The NHL wanted to measure where the PA currently is at.
The rejection tells the PA that the NHL believes they are still far apart. Both sides will do their best to spin the latest offer. My concern, another 15 games are about to be cancelled but... worse yet which side has to make the next move? These "baby step" improvements can last a long time before a deal is made.

What's next for the players. Capitulation is not an option. De-certified is. The NBA did it last year. 7 days after, lock-out was over.
Obviously the old guys would like to see this finalized as soon as possible. Guys like Jagr, Alfredsson, and Fatso are possibly losing their last season

Sure everyone wants it finalized. But the younger players have more time to make their $. I don't think Jagr cares a lot about how much RNH will be making in 3 years.
