He's not an NFL starter. I wouldn't touch him in the first few rounds

He easily has better receivers than any of his predecessors.

I wouldn't say that with such certainty. Leinart had Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith with Reggie Bush an explosive weapon receiving the ball as well. Fair to say those guys haven't become NFL superstars but at the college level that's a pretty awesome array of weapons. I think Leinart was hurt just like those guys actually in that I don't believe they had a professional mindset because I do think Leinart had the talent to play in the NFL.

Sanchez was only a full-time starter for one season, and that's easily forgotten, I thought he would bust from the start, not because he is from USC but because he just hadn't shown a whole lot and was picked more on reputation. And at receiver he had Damian Williams, Patrick Turner and "RoJo" Ronald Johnson. The latter two were extremely highly touted and coveted as recruits and had talent coming out their ears. Of course Turner and Johnson failed to fully come through whereas Williams has managed to become a reasonable NFL player. But again at the college level that receiving corps was insane. Those teams were the products of those years when Petey just swept the recruiting board in almost unprecedented fashion and routinely had high end 4 stars at the three deep and below.

Unless Woods and Lee become bona fide NFL star receivers, you can't really say Barkley has better receivers.

One thing I think is obvious that this USC team has a lot less depth than Carroll's teams and thus a lot more is asked from the starters. I don't think Barkley or the rest of the team have passed those tests with flying colors but then I can remember a fair few quarterbacks through the years who didn't do as well as previously expected as seniors (Matthew Stafford at Georgia for one).

It would actually be nice to see someone other than a QB going first overall. I'm pretty sure it's happened only twice in the last 10 years.

ILB aren't taken very high and he's more of a coverage LB.

The last couple LB's taken in the top 10 are;

Luke Kuechly (9th overall in 2012)
Aldon Smith (7th overall in 2011)
Rolando McClain (8th overall in 2010)
Aaron Curry (4th overall in 2009)
Keith Rivers (9th overall in 2008)
Jerod Mayo (10th overall in 2008)
A.J. Hawk (5th overall in 2006)
Ernie Sims (10th overall in 2006)

Yep. 2006 was Mario Williams and 2008 was Jake Long. The rest:

03 - Carson Palmer
04 - Eli Manning
05 - Alex Smith
07 - Jamarcus Russell
09 - Matt Stafford
10 - Sam Bradford
11 - Cam Newton
12 - Andrew Luck

Despite a bust and the jury still being out on some, a decent group. There's a reason QBs are usually selected first overall.

What a horrible pick Aaron Curry was. I mean he rated highly, but he totally sucked when he stepped in the NFL.

Which is why he is perfect in 4-3 base cover 2 scheme

I thought I'd take a look at some player stats for the two worst teams right now...

Quarterbacks
Blaine Gabbert, Jacksonville - 1,637 yards, 58.0% completion, 9 TD, 76.9 QB rating
Matt Cassel, Kansas City - 1,703 yards, 58.6%, 6 TD, 66.6

Running backs
Jamaal Charles, Kansas City - 734 yards, 4.7 yards/attempt, 3 TD
Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville - 414 yards, 4.8 y/a, 1 TD

Wide receivers
Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City - 626 yards, 49 rec, 3 TD
Cecil Shorts, Jacksonville - 561 yards, 29 rec, 4 TD

While Cassel has been bad, I believe that Kansas City can win against Carolina in week 13 and/or Cleveland in week 14 and end up missing the #1 pick.

And if you were the Dolphins, would you consider taking Matt Ryan instead of Jake Long? Not that Long isn't a good OL, but it took them 4 more years to find a QB, maybe.

A QB will go first 2 picks out of necessity now, but I wouldn't consider them among the best players available. USC QB's are becoming white players from Duke, don't pan out.

Gabbert has been playing quite well the last month or so. If he can keep that play up, I'd almost want us to maybe look at trading down a bit to the 3-5 range and get a guy like Jarvis Jones etc to fix the defence and pick up extra picks alonng the way.

As of now:

#1 Chiefs (1-9) - much easier schedule than Jags being the tie-breaker
#2 Jaguars (1-9)
#3 Browns (2-8)
#4 Panthers (2-8)
#5 Raiders (3-7)
#6 Eagles (3-7)
#7 Rams (3-6-1)

Then a whole slew of teams at 4-6.

If the Eagles dont beat the Panthers on Monday night I think they lose out. That would guarantee them a top 5 pick at 3-13.

The Jags blowing it against the Texans today was huge for them. Almost won a game that was seen as a guaranteed loss. Carolina and Cleveland really had to dig in today, but they managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, once again. Panthers having Chiefs, Raiders, and Eagles still on the schedule will make it tough for them, but I still wouldn't write them off completely. Losses like today's just further cement them as the biggest joke in the NFC.

CBS Sports have 2 mocks, both with Geno Smith going #1 to KC. One has Barkley going 9th, the other not in the 1st round.

I hope you don't mind critique, so here goes:

- Jones' spinal condition will make him drop. How far? No idea, but I don't see him going top-15. Too much of a risk.

- Browns will take Mingo I think. I don't buy into the Mingo hype, but as an athlete he's a freak. He's a strict 3-4 OLB, and I think the Browns take him instead of Moore (mistake I think but Browns will Brown).

- Raiders take Geno if he's there. Palmer is garbage. They need some sort of future at QB. Geno is probably that guy for them. (they also invested a recent top-10 pick in McClain so I doubt they invest another so soon)

- Last one for now but I'm not sure Dion Jordan goes that high. I'm a big fan of his, but he's a bit of an unknown. Oregon uses him weird. For example, on passing downs, he is used as a CB to cover guys instead of rushing the passer at times. We don't know the extent of his pass rushing capabilities. Super versatile and an athletic freak, but he needs some polish. I see him latter third of the 1st.

Nice mock though!

Kiper also said Jimmy Clausen was the 4th best player in his Draft. The man has zero credibility.

I think I'd prefer CB or OL for the Panther. Edwards and Edwards are playing well at DT while the secondary is getting carved up and Cam is running for his life. It will be interesting to see if anyone rises at those positions.
