I'm also really not sure how to feel about the CHL's Zlobin, Zykov, Zharkov vs Zhafyarov, Mozer, Yakimov. They have their pros and cons, but in the end they seem about equal. Curious to see what kind of CHL contingent we'll see.

(a lot of Z's on this team, hmm)
The attack of the Z's, if you will. Of that group, I would give the edge to Zlobin, Zhafyarov and Mozer. Zlobin is experienced and steady, if unspectular, but he has really good hands. Zhafyarov was a magician with the puck, and Mozer seemed to be all around the net. I liked Yakimov and Zharkov, and would take them if this was a small rink game, but since its not, I would opt for the speedy puckhandlers who can buzz around the net and create chances.

so now Quebec will still have 3 imports?? wtf is the point of that.
Nope. Two seperate trades. Quebec receives Kamaev then ships him off to Sherbrooke for two draft picks (a 5th rounder this year and a 1st in 2014). Import problem solved.
I will be loling if the lockout ends and buffalo takes Grigorenko on board.
I would be loling and surprised at the same time. Grigorenko hasn't looked like a guy who is ready for the next level in recent tournaments. Mike Johnston, a former NHL'er who did the color commentary for the August series, and who I believe is the least homerish and the most fair and objective to Russian players in his commentary, made the comment on air "Grigorenko can't expect to go the NHL and play the game at the slow pace that he is playing." I think that is a fair assessment. He would really have to pick up his pace to survive in the NHL small rink style of play.
If I get your point, and maybe I don't, Varnakov would be crazy not to bring Kucherov on to the team. He's a proven international star that excels at the pace needed for the big ice.
Why the extra forward? Did Varnakov say he's going Canadian? Normally we just do 12-8 not 13-7.
No he will probably go 12-8. I just think its going to be so tough to determine the bottom 6 on the forwards and that having a 13th would be good. And last year when telegin got injured you could tell the russians were tired vs canada and sweden so imo i had 13-7 with that in mind.. but it will probably be 12-8
Do you prefer the Pierre MacGuire style, or the two morons who broadcast the SSS? Always the same themes: overemphasize any good plays by Canadians, go on and on about how psychologically incapable Russians are of coping with the physical play inflicted on them by the far more manly and brave Canadians, and look the other way about the obvious discrepancies in the way penalties are assessed. On the one hand, Russians are supposedly terrified of Canada's violent game, but on the other, the Russians are too violent and need to be penalized for it. Those guys are just trying to please the local fans and insure their paycheck. Mike Johnston at least tells it like it is, reports the game as it is actually happening, and gives Russians credit when warranted, instead of prolonging these time-worn myths and legends that are so popular among the Canadian faithful.

The views of Sam Cosentino and RJ Broadhead should not be construed as being the collective beliefs of an entire nation. There are very few Canadians in this day and age that believe we can beat the Russians through mere physical intimidation. Those who do are simply ignorant or misinformed
Oh, pleeeease. Even Sam and RJ mentioned in one of their broadcasts that you couldn't intimidate Russia through physical play any more. So many of those guys play in small rinks in the CHL these days. However, even though it doesn't intimidate like it used to, it's still pretty effective as a style of hockey.
And as far as Canadian broadcasters go, they are doing their job for a Canadian audience, which has already been pointed out. Nothing wrong with that.

Agreed. I was only responding to a poster who called Mike Johnston an idiot. In my opinion, Johnston has the courage to take a balanced approach in analyzing games involving the Russians, and I just wanted to voice my appreciation for him. I understand that Sam and RJ are just doing their jobs, and I do remember them saying at one point that Russians are bigger and stronger now and that intimidation-style doesn't work.

I was wrong to paint Canadians with such a broad brush. Many Canadian posters on this board clearly do not have those views. Sorry for going overboard.
Does anyone know when Russia will announce their preliminary camp roster? I'm really curious to see if Varnakov will swallow his pride and invite prokhorkin and kucherov and just to see if there is some surprises or anything. thanks!

Probably late this week, or next week sometime. Usually 1.5-2 weeks prior to camp.
