Of course he's not at Roy's level, but Varly is a kid I don't really doubt. Like Lando, I view health and experience as the only things between him and being one of the very best in the league at his position. From there we'll just have to see what the competition for the award looks like and how well we can support him.

How about he get us into the playoffs first before we start talking Vezina hmmmmm? Hes grown on me quite a bit and I see a bright future here for him but he still has a ways to go yet.

It's not a prediction it's a fact. You'll just have to wait and see.

I agree. He has Vezina potential. Like RoytoSakic I'm thinking he'll win two if he stays healthy. He's a very special goalie imo. To compare him with Roy is a little bit too optimistic, though. Roy was crazy good. 2nd best goalie of all times in my book.

Haha searched google for Varly's stats and typed Steve Varlamov into the search bar... Nonetheless, when corrected I still couldn't find anything. Does anyone have his numbers for the year? Also how hes doing relative to the other starters in the KHL would be nice.

Anyone worried that Varlamov's extraordinary play in the KHL will make it more enticing for him to leave the NHL if he comes back and doesn't play up to the same standard?

His play will make teams want to pay him even more to play in the K. That should be the big worry.

I don't worry. Varly wanted a no1 spot in the NHL and that's what he got.
I assume he won't quit the NHL before having some success. That's at least how I feel about Semyon.

Oh this argument again. Brilliant. Never mind what the man himself has said, he'll want to stay in Russia because that's what all the Russians do. OBVIOUSLY.

Lokomotiv and Varly

The New York Times has a nice piece about the resurrection of the Lokomotiv team and Varly's outstanding play which has contributed to their success this season.

That's great to see him doing well, but what was the minor injury he sat out with? Anybody know? Hope it's nothing lower body related, that would be mildly worrisome with his history.

In an interview with the Eurolanche people Varlamov said it was nothing serious and expected to play soon. Sounds like a few players are being injured overseas though thats not too surprising.

Maybe I'm paranoid, or maybe it's from all the years of following Forsberg, but if it's something like a groin injury for a guy with an injury history like Varly, minor doesn't always mean it's over and done with.

If it's like a shoulder thing, or a hand thing, or a foot thing, or a chest thing I wouldn't be concerned, but anything knee and groin related makes me a tad nervous.

We were afraid last year yet it didn't happen. Varlamov isn't dumb, he knows what cost him his job in Washington. I understand your concern though and I'm a little afraid at times, however these things can change and it seems as though they have.

Ehh, just because he was relatively healthy last year, and he knows injuries hurt him in Washington, doesn't mean he's completely past his injury woes.

I hope there was something that he was or wasn't doing that he could improve on to become more durable, but these little injuries for goaltenders can sometimes (not always) lead to a more prevalent problem. That's why I was curious if it was groin or knee related.

I thought he said at some point last year that the key difference between Wash/Col was their medical trainers, that Wash's didn't really give a ****.
