Petr Sykora

So what happened to him? He's not that old, and had a pretty decent season, why didn't anyone take a flyer on him?

With the NJD need for wingers, I have no idea why they let him walk.

He's still a possibility for us. We think that Lou is still holding Sykora as a last resort while he pursues other options via trade.

From the Devils beat writer, Tom Gulitti

Sykora wants to be a Devil, but lockout might keep him overseas

He's basically waiting to hear back from the Devils on their interest in him.
My feeling all along has been that he'll have to prove himself in another training camp among guys like Tedenby and Butler.

I think that once things get rolling again in the NHL, if the Devils don't sign him immediately, he'll get picked up pretty quickly.

Ah, okay. I'm surprised Sykora was willing to sit around without a contract for that long waiting on the Devils.

Feel good quote, so take it for what it is:
“There were some things going on, but I really wanted to be with the Devils again,” he said. “I kind of feel like I belong here. They treat me right here and it’s my home, so I was really pushing towards being with the Devils.”

Sykora hated being sent out of town the first time around with the Devils and wound up on quite a few teams where he was generally unhappy. NJ is familiar with him and his good friend Elias is there.
I think he wants to make sure he winds up somewhere that he knows will be a welcoming environment if he's going to go through the toughness of an NHL season again.

He's never been a player to hold back on his feelings, for sure.

Last year Sykora said it was Devils or bust from him. I don't think he'd be interested in playing anywhere else.

He's still good for 20 goals if we put him Elias and Zubrus again. The geezer line was surprisingly effective last season.

Lou will wait for the economics of the CBA to get ironed out first

I think we can squeeze another year or two out of him. Zubrus-Elias-Sykora line was effective

Given how they've fared so far in the AHL (Tendenby 2 goals and 2 assists in 10 games, Butler 2 goals and 1 assist in 10 games), I'd say it's a fairly safe bet he could beat them out in camp.

Probably, but it's not a given. He did beat Tedenby for a spot in camp last season.

Kovalchuk - Henrique - Sykora
Elias - Zajac - Zubrus
Tedenby - Josefson - Clarkson
Carter - Gionta - Bernier

Even without Parise, that lineup is full of threats.

This is basically what I was expecting, too.
The problem with Sykora is... the season catches up with him pretty quickly.

I'm happy to bring the guy back in, but with a bit more sheltering of minutes.
His line with Elias & Zubrus was the go-to line last year, starting against teams top lines and logging major minutes. He eventually got benched more & more later in games.

His stamina is a definite issue, especially because he lacks speed to begin with, and I see them trying to test that as best as possible.

I'd do a minor swap of Kovalchuk & Elias

Kovy-Zajac-Zubrus
Elias-Henrique-Sykora

But, I agree. I'm not as doom & gloom about the upcoming season as most people are about the absence of Parise. All 4 lines as written, have proven chemistry within them.

Sykora is heavily sheltered by Elias and is pretty much useless if he's not playing with him.

I hope he'll be back on a 1-year deal. His speed has decreased, but his shot is still very good.

yeah, but when he is with elias he's quite useful. he'd have the 2nd best shot on the team behind kovy, and that's something that's very worth having. Not to mention he would keep clarkson on the third line

tedenby/butler-josefson-clarkson looks like a much better line than tedenby/butler-josefson-bernier

Main problem with Sykie is that he's a pretty ineffective bottom 6 player and Elias is doomed to be constantly paired with him. I think he won't come back. Butler was signed to take his place, in my opinion.

Minnesota will give you a 2nd for Sykora, he'd really help our chances of becoming a contender. Veteran experience plus some goal scoring.

Don't see Sykora going anywhere else in his career at this point. I feel like he's comfortable with the Devils organization and fills a direct and immediate need for them.

So? Lupul got traded for Pronger by Anaheim twice. This is Sykora's second stint with the Devils too.
