Any interest in an HF Journal Club?

Just a thought I had, but now that there's a forum for serious science discussion, I thought it would be interesting to have a journal club. Perhaps every week someone posts a paper from a reputable journal (ideally free or easily available), and we can have a scholarly discussion on the topic. It can be from any science discipline (medicine, physics, chemistry, etc.), though we could set up a schedule on topics since those of us viewing this forum almost certainly have varied scientific interests.

If there's enough interest I guess we could set up some guidelines, a schedule, etc.

I'm interested in following along but i am no science star so my contributions will be minimal at best and more than likely useless

The one aspect from University seminar classes I never thought I'd miss but upon reading this thread idea I kind of want in.

Sounds interesting, especially as a place to receive journals from a variety of fields. I just worry that some papers may have language that cause the paper to be difficult to digest for those not familiar with that field.

+1.

It would be cool if we had people from a bunch of various backgrounds talk about an article and give a summery/big picture paragraph. The only issue I see is a lot of the scientific literature is not open access.

I would be down for this. My contributions will probably be limited to biology, but this is a great way to learn about things outside of my field. I agree with PSUCapsFan that most literature is not open access, but there are quite a few that can be found through Google scholar and the like, which should provide with enough to talk about for a while.

Just to add to this, PubMed is a great resource for life sciences.

I'd be interested.

In terms of content, maybe we should all name a subject area we'd be most comfortable in. That way we'd know which subjects to focus on. And for the sake of inclusion, maybe emphasize topics in each area that aren't super in depth?

For example mine would be biology, but i have a decent understand in most other sciences. If we did a paper on say something in depth on quantum, id be up ***** creek without a paddle. If its something introductory with quantum, then i think that maybe more useful.

Just my 2 cents, im good with whatever the OP wants

To start, someone should grab a journal article from the 1940's or 1950's (or before). It was pretty amazing the stuff they did back then to setup the building blocks for today.

I'd do it.

Though we should probably pick something controversial so that we don't get 50 "Gee, I didn't know that" posts.

I'd definitely follow along, perhaps start a new thread with a proper title now that there is interest. Get things rolling.
