And the pick we traded for Kessel wasn't a 70 point center/winger at the time, but he turned out to be. Doesn't make the loss any better.
I like how at no point in this conversation did someone say that we won that trade or whatever **** you're trying to twist this into. What was actually said is that Gardiner and Lupul weren't major parts of our team, you know, because they weren't. Lupul had been relegated to the third line at that time. Gardiner was just a prospect in college; talented for sure, but just a prospect.

I guess we should think about another scenario....if the union decertifies, where do the RFA's and unsigned prospects (college) go.

I think he's out if he hits ufa.

Not to mention bobby Ryan seems to always be on the block
Wait... what? How were Lupul and Gardiner "big pieces" and how in the world have they not made moves to replace what they've lost? They have prospects cracking their way into the NHL, such as Holland and Palmieri. They have Vatanen. They drafted Lindholm. You make it sound like they've been sitting around doing nothing while all of this is going on.

Also, Anaheim didn't "lose" Visnovsky. They traded him. And considering there may not even be a season, they would have gotten a 2nd for basically what amounts to nothing, since Visnovsky has said he plans to retire after this year.

Just because you have Vatanen, Fowler and Lindholm doesn't mean losing Gardiner and Schultz for nothing doesn't matter. If you resigned Beauch, in a few years that could of been the best d-corp in the league. Even if Gardiner was "expendable" doesn't mean you trade him along with a PPG winger for nothing.

Gardiner, Lupul, Carlyle, Brown. Perry and Getz come on over and join the dark side.
Lupul wasn't a PPG winger in Anaheim, and you might want to see if he can replicate his success before you anoint him one period. Lupul was expendable in Anaheim, because there just wasn't much room for him. He's clearly more important in Toronto, and that's great for Toronto, but in Anaheim he was further down on the depth chart.

As for Gardiner, losing him hurt, absolutely, but Beauchemin filled a greater need. Fowler jumped right past Gardiner and Schultz on Anaheim's depth chart. You're revising history to make it look a lot worse than it was, or is, for Anaheim. The Ducks still have one of the best prospect pools in the NHL, and that without Gardiner and Schultz. Any claims that Anaheim is just losing pieces, and not replacing them, is just untrue.

Perry and Getzlaf have no experience with Gardiner, don't have the best experience with Carlyle, and Brown is just irrelevant.

Anaheim didn't trade a draft pick, they traded a player... one they saw plenty of in Anaheim. Your comparison only works if Lupul would have been a PPG player in Anaheim. Wasn't going to happen.

Edit: To give you some context... Beauchemin was Anaheim's best defenseman last season, and was one of the better defensive D's in the league. What was he in Toronto?
