Phaneuf, He's in the top 30-35 D-men in this league.

HM to Staal who seems to have lost his "elite defensively" label and is going to earn it back as soon as the NHL starts...
And to Boyle, face it, he's a 3rd liner .

EDIT - for my 2nd favourite team, the 'Yotes, I'd pick Vrbata. Silently scoring a ton of goals every season.
Was going to say Staal also.

Due to his concussion and how well McD and Girardi played last year, I think Staal has been somewhat forgotten. Seeing polls on here with him ranked 3rd on our team, when most Ranger fans will say he is our number 1 dman.

I'd say roman polak. Only third pairing due to pietrangelo and shattenkirk. I'd trust him on the first pk pair easily.

I would've said Foligno before he was traded. He brought a lot of energy to every game and tried to make things happen. Other than that, Anderson had a pretty incredible playoff run, and played on par with the best goalie in the league throughout that series.

Saku Koivu and Jonas Hiller. Koivu is still a great faceoff man, very reliable in his own end and still capable of 45 points or so offensively.

Hiller is one of the most consistant goalies (stats wise) in the league of the last four years or so...

With the exception of last season, where he was only bad for the first half of the season coming back from vertigo. In the 2nd half, he was back to the same goalie he's always been. There's not many goalies I'd trade a 'normal' Jonas Hiller for.

I'm going to echo most Sens fans and say Craig Anderson.

Hon. mention: Kyle Turris.

It seems like many players on the Lightning are underrated but in my book Hedman is extremely underrated. He usually plays against the top opponents every game but all anyone looks at are his offensive numbers. He is getting very good defensively and now that we have some people that can play defense his offensive numbers should improve.

No, you have that wrong. He became the #2 in Calgary after the Bouwmeester trade, and over the season he started to play like trash. So he was traded for what was actually a pretty decent package (50-point two way center, solid defenseman, 20-goal/40-point two-way winger) and then Calgary screwed up the asset management afterwards. Phaneuf has gotten his head on straight since then, and is playing better defense than he did but it's still not the defense he was being hyped up as playing by the Toronto media.

Came to post this. One of the most underrated players in the league.

The Toronto media hypes nothing up about Phaneuf.

And the package Calgary got was not decent.

He's underrated around the league because of his attitude and because he hasn't put up more than 40 points, but he will eventually.

Also because of his defensive brain farts that he tends to have every now and then.

David Krejci leads the playoffs in scoring then has to have hip surgery in the short off season. He comes back on opening night when Doctors said his recovery was suppose to take to November. This causes a bad season and now he is considered a throw away.

Green is most frequently underrated. People continue to write about him as if he's horrible defensively, and while that was never completely accurate, it hasn't been even close to being true in two seasons.

Roberto Luongo. I can't believe people think he's worth nothing more than a cap-dump.

Gionta, able to put up ~25 goals
Plekanec, solid 2-way C
