Gardiner is most certainly _not_ a project. He did pretty well in the NHL last year even. Oh, and the Krajicek comparison is way off. Gardiner is more physical (watch him in the NHL), better shot, is bigger etc... They aren't in the same stratosphere.
Actually, Krajicek is bigger by two inches, and was a far better defender. When the Canucks got him there was similar hype to Gardiner, but he had absolutely no physical element to his game and once the opposition began to exploit that he became more and more of a fringe player. If we are going to base a deal around a young player for Lou it just has to be a better player than him.
Also more to the point, we don't need a lefty, we are too deep on that side as it is considering that Connaughton looks ready to start getting some NHL minutes.
Gardiner really doesn't even make sense for us to target. He's going to be a great player, but unless we intend on trading Edler, he wouldn't get any real opportunities here.
Players that make sense for us include Grabo(but not for the Leafs), JVR, Lupul, and to a lesser extent Kulemin, Phaneuf, and Bozak.
*Simply based on how they'd fit on our roster, not based on skill/valie

Grabovski would be in the same situation as Gardiner. He would be stuck as a 3rd line center. His cap hit would also way to high for that type of depth, 5.5 million. He also is relatively small which is completely opposite to how Mike Gillis is trying to build this team. I really do not understand why so many are suggesting he be a good trade option.
Bozak
Frattin
Percy/Blacker - I wanted Finn
1st - protected that if we don't get it this year we get a draft pick this season and a 1st the next year.
Kadri was mentioned by another member instead of Bozak, but never heard back if that was also except able, and I might want Finn then to make up the difference in not getting a roster player.

I say take out Frattin and between Percy or Blacker I don't mind giving up Blacker.

Despite his size, Grabo really gives the Nucks 3 scoring lines, 2 PP units and actual scoring depth. His cap hit may be high, but our line up would have versatility and could have a top nice of 50 point scorers.

How? Not debating Grabo's talent, but add 5.5 mil to our cap, then come up with a team with this versitility, keep in mind Edler needs a raise.
I agree; also stop beating around the bush with this "protected 1st" stuff. Burke doesn't really make those deals. It's also an overpayment; from the Leafs.
The way I see it; the options are:
- Drop the 1st, drop Frattin, add a 2nd
- Keep the 1st, add your 1st, drop Frattin

You didn't subtract Luongo's cap; which is fairly close to Grabo's (x10 years). You also fill a roster spot; without creating a hole; as your goalie spot is filled already. That's better utilization of the cap.
Your argument is meaningless. Not trading Luongo, or trading Luongo for equal cap; has no impact on Edler. You have a hard time finding interest for Lu as it is; if you're looking to not bring salary back..... good luck to you.

You pay your 3rd line center 5.5 mil, and you think that is good cap use? If you take back grabo you actually lose .2mil of cap space, plus you need to sign a backup goalie, so assuming that is lack you are at a million bucks more. you still have to trim 7 million from team and fill out a roster.
If you just subtract luongo's salary in a trade of mainly futures, it ends up being much better value. I posted this somewhere else but in 13/14 with a 60 mil cap we are likely to see a big youth movement.
Something like
Sedin sedin Bur 16.5 mil
booth Kess Kass 11 mil 34.5mil
Frattin Schreoder Hansen 3.5 mil
Weise Lappy Volpatti 3.5 mil
Hamhuis Bieksa 9 mil
Edler Garrison 9 mil 22.5 mil
Tanev Kconn 2.5 mil

Lack .8 mil 4.8 mil
And even that is over the 60 mil cap.
Now try fitting in Grabo and his 5.5 mil
I agree..moving Luongo with no salary coming back is great for Van, kinda sucks for the team taking on 10 years of 5.3 cap though.

I think it really means we can take guys who will be a UFA in a year, my understanding is the cap wont actually move this year, they are going to pro-rate everyone, and despite it being a 60 mil cap, you can spend tot he curent 70 mil, So we could take on a few guys, as long as they expired after this season.

So... Bozak, Blacker and a second? Yeah that borders on a terrible trade for us. Don't get me wrong, we could use Bozak but something else meaningful needs to be included. Swap in Kadri or Finn in place of Blacker and drop the pick.

So, once again we are at Lupul/Connolly/Lombardi...all UFA

I have a better idea! How about we just don't trade with each other because that deal is an underpayment.
Not interested in giving you guys a Franchise goalie for spare parts
Meh. I'd prefer Lupul, and probably wouldn't pull the trigger myself, but I wouldn't complain if that was the eventual return. Same thing that StringerBell said about the pieces.
