Building the '93 Canadiens team with current players

I don't have the exact line combination, but let's try something like this.

Vincent Damphousse - Kirk Muller - Brian Bellows
Gilbert Dionne - Stephane Lebeau - Mike Keane
John LeClair - Denis Savard - Benoit Brunet
Paul DiPietro - Guy Carbonneau - Ed Ronan
Gary Leeman

Mathieu Schneider - Éric Desjardins
Kevin Haller - Lyle Odelein
Patrice Brisebois - Jean-Jacques Daigneault
Rob Ramage

Roy
Racicot

Simon Gagne - Ryan Kessler - Matt Moulson
Pierre Dagenais* - Derick Brassard - Cal Clutterbuck
Nathan Horton -Pierre-Marc Bouchard - Stéphane Veilleux
Kyle Wellwood - Éric Bélanger - Mike Blunden
Jonathan Cheechoo**

John-Micheal Liles - Kristopher Letang
Josh Gorges - Willie Mitchell
Marc-André Bergeron - Bruno Gervais
Brad Stuart

Martin Brodeur
Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers

*Ok, I know he isn't active anymore, but he's the closest player from Gilbert Dionne I could find within the last 10 years.

**Ok, the guy is an AHL-er, but as Dagenais and Dionne, I think Cheechoo and Leeman are about the same type of guy.

I can't imagine anyone else other than Brodeur to be where Roy is. This is a little bit of a lull we've had with goalies for some reason. Luongo and Fleury aren't trustworthy enough and can be erratic (although Fleury does have a Cup). Lundqvist hasn't even reached a Cup final. Thomas if he ever plays again doesn't have the longevity, Quick is too young and Ward has very little to show for. Brodeur for me.

I have no issue with Kesler in Damphousse's spot although it should be the 2011 version of him because Damphousse at his best was a pretty good scorer.

You think Brodeur NOW is close where Roy was back then? Lundqvist is closer in age and may be our best bet.

Roy is pretty unique and the one piece of that '93 team that can't be reproduced.

Cam Ward is the homeless man's Roy. Rookie Smythe, undefeated in game 7s, took a garbage team to the ECF his only other playoff appearance. Eventually we're going to have to put some of the Hurricane's lack of recent success on his shoulders, especially if they don't make the dance this season after two high-profile pickups (although it seems the NHL hasn't booked the venue, much less hired a DJ), but he's the only guy with anything close to Roy's aura of "just get me to the damn playoffs, we'll be alright."

Good call on defense, even though I'd switch Ballard with Bryce Salvador.

Fair enough on Ward.

The only reason I'd say Brodeur over Lundqvist is because not only his overall career but he was just in a Cup final and would have won the Smythe. Lundqvist hasn't been a sparkling playoff goalie near Roy yet.
