How you can say the front office didn't try or ownership didn't try is pretty ignorant. Did they suck and make mistakes, yeah, but they weren't exactly throwing out 25 minimum salary guys.

Agreed. Of course we can question their moves in hindsight, but there was no reason to believe, even WITH Bobby V, that they'd lose 93 freakin games with that amount of talent on the roster.
The Sox have lost me as a fan with their front office moves last 2-3 years. Now, they're using the mistakes they've made not to sign any FA. I didn't watch them last year and will continue to ignore them with this bumbling ownership and front office. The fans who continue to go to the games are being shortchanged.
Bobby V. was a huge mistake and they will continue to blunder.
I like Farrell but I don't think they'll improve if they don't upgrade their lineup and pitching unless they make moves that will improve the team. Right now, I see them finishing at or near the bottom of the standings.
they probably will but to me they are in the EXACT same position as the Bruins were following the Dave Lewis debacle. Farrell is their stable type similar to Clode and the Red Sox farm system is very strong and guys are getting close the way the Bruins was back then.
There is reason why patience is a virtue is such a famous quote- and the Red Sox may have to take another kick in the nuts next year, but with some solid talent up top, deep pockets, and a handful or players on the way like the Bruins had with Lucic, Krejci, Wheeler, and Marchand things are going to start looking up pretty quickly.
Their bullpen seems to be solid. Bard & Aceves had an off year, but the rest seems very positive. Thing is, they're signing (or will sign) average players - to relate it to movies, a B Movie. Platoons are nice to have, but not more than one. I would not feel comfortable with Ross (if he re-signs) - Ellsbury - Gomes/Kalish. It's weak.
I'm okay with Gomes replacing Ross. There isn't that much of a difference between the two. I just hope they don't go and re-sign Ross now for 3 years, $20M+. They're not a contender next season so I'd like to see one of the young guys play.
No thanks to Napoli for 4 years. Let him go to Seattle if that's what they're offering.
It really is a terrible free agent class this year.
I really hope they don't sign Swisher. It's not that he's not a good player, I just don't think they are super close to contending. I'd rather they draft high in the second round (especially with the new rules that eliminates picks in the first/second round) than forfeit the pick to sign a guy that won't be here when the team is ready to truly contend for a championship.
I would just avoid the guys that were offered arbitration, save for Hamilton on a semi short-term deal (5 years max). I'd rather focus on guys like Victorino, Ludwick, and Napoli, at least as far as position players go. Pitchers are more wide open, but Marcum, Haren, McCarthy, and Feldman are options I'd look at.
Yep...with more and more teams locking up their good young players well before free agency there are going to be less and less really good free agents out there....and when there are good ones available (like Hamilton or Greinke) the prices are going to be ridiculous.
Boston needs to save as many picks as possible and build through the draft. That will also keep the payroll down.
Count me out on the Brandon McCarthy bandwagon. He has a brutal history with arm injuries and is coming off brain surgery. No thanks. Especially on a deal more than 1 year.

Don't pencil in any prospect as if they're locks to make the Red Sox. If you're used to the hockey draft I'm sure that #7 looks tempting but the draft is very, very much a crapshoot in baseball. There's very little certainty, even if you draft high.

Agreed. Baseball draft is so tough, do you gamble on a HS kid who is 4-5 years away from the majors, but who knows if he will ever even come close. Do you go with a college pitcher who likely has only #2 or #3 starter potential.
Plus, you always have to be weary of picking a pitcher. A lot of potential for arm injuries in the 2-4 years it would take a draft pick to make the majors.

Other players would be Austin meadows, Austin Wilson, and clint Frazier. All OF prospects with Wilson the lone college player. In case all 6 are gone by some bad stroke of luck I think kris Bryant is the move. Corner infielder with the best power in the draft. Potential 1b of the future
Got to see a lot of Austin Wilson this summer in the Cape League. Big time player. However, the guy I would look at patrolled the same outfield as him. His name is Phil Ervin and he is an outfielder at Samford. He is going to be a hell of a player. He was by far the most dominant player on the Cape this past year.

The problem is that there is still the entire high school/college season ahead. These projections could drastically change by June. I'm trying to hold off before investing too much time into the draft only to have way different players be relevant.
