Some more or less serious talks about Drouin being better than McKinnon starting to heat up. Thoughts?

Especially you, GM17 and Jason. #fingerpointing

I only seen them once this year and many of the same issues that got me labeled a a MacKinnon hater still exist. I just don't see him as a center at the next level. I don't think he has terrific vision or hockey sense. Drouin, on the other hand, I always liked. I had him ranked top 10 long before this season even started. I think I still lean towards MacKinnon since I believe he could be an elite winger with his skills. Not an elite center at the next level. Drouin has years to go on the defensive side of the puck and even then I doubt he will be more then average in his own end.

I prefer a Hall type winger over a Kane type winger any day of the week.

What are everyones thoughts an Zadorov? I know we don't need another Dman, but if were going to pick for value and hes still there at 15, I think we have to do it. Large Dman, good mobility, great in his own end, comparable to chara. Him and Larsson as a future top pair would be insane

Good hitter, but form what I`ve heard and seen (very little I admit, but still), there`s not much offense in him.

At least for now. We don`t need that kind of a defenseman at the moment. Plus I kind of doubt that such Dman is going to be the BPA.

I caught a London/Plymouth game a couple weeks back. Tried to focus on the 2013 draft eligibles (Domi, Zadorov, Horvat, Hartman).

Zadorov delivered a textbook open ice hit on a Plymouth forward who was looking down as he was receiving a pass. Wasn't even so much Zadorov finishing his check, it was like the Plymouth forward skated into a brick wall. In a subsequent shift, another Plymouth player tried to goad Zadorov into a fight but he maintained his composure. As the refs were sorting out the penalties, Zadorov slowly skated by the Plymouth bench and gestured at them. I loved it.

Tough to get a read on him offensively during that game. He picked up an assist on Horvat's PP goal but that was more of an individual effort from Horvat scoring on the rush. Zadorov had a heavy wrist shot, but never seemed to get it on net. But he certainly did seem fluid for a 6'5 D.

Best case: Braydon Coburn?
Worst case: Vitali Vishnevski?

If the lockout isn't settled by the draft does the draft still go on ?

I know the NFL was going to have it's draft and they did, teams just weren't allowed to trade players.

Wonder if the NHL would do the same.

Obviously if the union breaks apart then the draft would be canceled.

Better question is if we have to forfeit the pick next year if there isn't one this year. That would suck.

It's a good question, and there really isn't a precedent for it other than the NFL example you cited. Hopefully it doesn't end up being a problem.

I know this has been debated before, but I think it could be a possibility that maybe with the new CBA, the first round fine is overruled. And this is why it was not forfeited this year.

I mean ''When time is on your side you use it'' is better than saying ''With the new CBA there is a possibility it will be overturned'' If there was you know Lou wouldn't lead on by saying it. I think it could be a possibility, but I wouldn't count on it or even place a bet.

I want Domi. He would be our children of the corn with Matteau. And we need a C, although I have no idea how Domi plays or anything like that.

If we end up picking in the mid 20's, I'd be thrilled if we landed Anthony Duclair. Jonathan Drouin would be my ideal pick but the odds of us drafting in the top #6, cause that's where he'll be going IMO, is slim to none.

Not to bring up an older topic from the thread but I personally don't know if Anthony Brodeur would be a good pick for us.. There be pressure anywhere because of the name, but a lot more pressure in NJ.. I guess it would depend on his mental toughness.. I can hear it now at MSG: "Tonyyyy.. Tonyyyy.."

Wasn't the lockout resolved by the time of the draft that year though? The season was canceled, but they had the new CBA done before the draft so it could go on as scheduled.

They canceled the draft, as it had been initially scheduled, before the CBA was resolved.

I think it coincided with what would have been the end of the regular season that year.
Either March or April.

But long before that, at the start of the lockout, they said there'd be a full cancellation if no CBA had been reached.

So they scrambled to do the lottery ball thing and not the usual fanfare once a new deal was signed.

2005 Draft (to be held in Ottawa) was postponed since there was no CBA. There needs to be a CBA in place since it also determines eligibility rules. One big chance in the last CBA was an update on eligibility for European players. Pre-2005, you had to draft a European player to bring him into the NHL. So you got older guys like Mark Streit, Lubomir Visnovsky, etc who were taken in their mid-late 20s. In 2004, guys like Johan Franzen (24) were still drafted. But in the new CBA, they would have been free agents and not eligible for the 2005 Draft. The other change was that the Draft was reduced from nine rounds to seven.

The last CBA was signed on July 21st, roughly a month after the Draft would have normally taken place. The league hastily put together the 30 team lottery for the Draft which was rescheduled for July 30-31. I forget why exactly, but they couldn't proceed with having the Draft in Ottawa's arena and instead had it inside an Ottawa area hotel with no fans in attendance. The league awarded the 2008 Draft to Ottawa as a result.

Doesn't sound like there's any amendments to the draft process being planned, but the Draft would seemingly be contingent on a ratified CBA.
