Well I'm sure you know what a mediator does but this is Alberta Justice's definition.

Mediators won't put up with mud slinging, but will make actual negotiating happen. This is a good thing.

To be honest I really hate the new alignment proposal. I think it's stupid that the teams in the 7 team conferences have a better shot at the playoffs than those with 8 but that's a discussion for another thread.
It's been said a lot here before but I think the NHL could easily drop the 5 year demand since it's more the backdiving nature of the problem contracts rather than the term itself that is creating the issue. If the PA agreed to something like the 5% variation year to year I think that would more than address the situation.

I don't know how the league can justify adding two new teams when profits aren't even being maximized with 30 teams. The Coyotes need to be relocated before any talk of expansion begins.

It's okay, the league will add more teams thus making that all mighty revenue column go up, even though there will be worse players now in the league and teams still losing.

A big time cash grab benefits all the clubs.
Expansion fees for two new teams based in Markham and Quebec would be astronomical.

But he's also not going to be involved in the NHL/NHLPA negotiations so who knows?!
Mediators could be good or they could be useless but its unlikely they'll have a negative effect
These mediators have met with both sides separately already and are scheduled to meet together on wednesday (both sides and the mediators)
From what i've read mediators were used in febreuary of 05 three days before the season was cancelled they were used again in spring of 05 i don't think this situation can be compared to the last lockout (different mediators different pa boss different labour issues )
@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Mediation can give both sides a reality check. But at the end of the day, the willingness to compromise has to come from both sides.
@TSNBobMcKenzie: Mediation is not binding. It's just an objective third party trying to help process get on track. Mediators were, IIRC, used in 2004-05.

@Real_ESPNLeBrun: One thing to keep in mind is that when NHL/NHLPA had mediation session in early Feb 2005, NHLPA still had not accepted the cap. NHLPA accepted cap a bit later in same month... point being that it was hard for mediator to find any common ground at point where they met

They wonder why some fans aren't drawn to the game when they have to watch BizNasty or MacIntyre take a regular shift.
Oh well it creates more jobs for the PA and now Green, Byers and Stortini will be NHL regulars once again.

Just throwing it out, but does more teams equal more advertisement money and bigger TV deals?
I have a question about decertification. If the union does that, it would mean the NHL draft is illegal. Since Seth Jones is 18, could Katz go to Portland and offer them a chuck of cash to buy out Jones and sign him here?
Oh and I am in support of expanding 2 more teams. I dont' see why it would mean 4th line enforcers get more ice time. It would probably just draw more European players who prefer their home country to the AHL back into the mix.
