I know Max has a flair for offense as well but Duclair has impressed me every time I saw him play and that goes from Midget AAA (Lac St-Louis Lions) and his 1st junior year for the Remparts.

What was the biggest reason for reducing the draft from 9 rounds to 7?

Guessing here: the speed of expansion that the NHL was going through a few years prior to the last lockout.

Devils haven't selected a 1st rounder out of the CHL since 2006 and have only drafted from the CHL twice with their last 10 1st round picks. Just food for thought when speculating who they might take.

If for whatever reason, Valeri Nichushkin drops in the mid to late teen's, I wouldn't mind taking a chance on him.

Having one of the best Russian forward on our team would help greatly and probably intice him to come to NA a little faster then usual.

More time to hit the golf course after the draft before having to fly back home? Once they changed the overage European rule, I don't think anybody was too distraught about shortening the draft by an hour.

I don't know if there was talk in 2005 about moving Round 1 into its own night (2007 was the first year). Previously they'd do Rounds 1-3 on Saturday and Rounds 4-9 on Sunday. Might have been as simple as shortening it so that team personnel could comfortably make their flights.

I sat through all seven rounds of the 2011 Draft and most of the GMs were wandering around the arena by the end.

Hell at last year's, everyone was wandering around the Pitt arena. I saw a few media faces just floating back and forth. By the later rounds no one is really interested any more.

In Devils` case, the discussion about picking in the top10 is luckily for us, usually pointless. So let`s not go there unless we have to.

Outside of the top10, I`d pick Lazar, Domi, Compher or Horvat, in that order. Those I know the most about.

Then again, I don`t know much about the rest... yet.

I don`t think it`s a trend. You could make a case for any of those players we selected. I wouldn`t count out anything.

I wouldn't think that we have a bias one way or another. Sweden happened to have a resurgence after a drought in the early 2000s. The USHL (the U-18 team in particular) has started to turn out some great prospects (plus USHL prospects aren't hamstrung by the CHL/AHL rule).

With the Larsson pick, we were probably at the mercy of how EDM/COL/FLO picked. I assume we would have happily taken Landeskog or Huberdeau if Larsson was gone. Although there was that rumor that we were considering Zibanejad at #4.

One big chance in the last CBA was an update on eligibility for European players. Pre-2005, you had to draft a European player to bring him into the NHL. So you got older guys like Mark Streit, Lubomir Visnovsky, etc who were taken in their mid-late 20s. In 2004, guys like Johan Franzen (24) were still drafted. But in the new CBA, they would have been free agents and not eligible for the 2005 Draft. The other change was that the Draft was reduced from nine rounds to seven.

The last CBA was signed on July 21st, roughly a month after the Draft would have normally taken place. The league hastily put together the 30 team lottery for the Draft which was rescheduled for July 30-31. I forget why exactly, but they couldn't proceed with having the Draft in Ottawa's arena and instead had it inside an Ottawa area hotel with no fans in attendance. The league awarded the 2008 Draft to Ottawa as a result.

Doesn't sound like there's any amendments to the draft process being planned, but the Draft would seemingly be contingent on a ratified CBA.
Interesting. That suggests that the Draft would be cancelled entirely if the lockout goes that long.

I hope this doesn't happen, but if the lockout somehow continues into next season, would they just not draft an entire class of players and fold them into the next year's draft?

When you get to the late rounds, most picks are basically even odds with lottery tickets. The odds are stacked against those prospects making the NHL and sticking with a team. Maybe the league decided it was pointless to flood teams' development systems with more prospects who had little chance of making the show.

this may have been discussed before, but what is the deadline for the Devils to announce they will keep/lose the first rounder if theres no Stanley cup final this year?

If we are sticking with a Swede trend, I'll accept a lucky lotto ball and draft Elias Lindholm.

How awesome it would be to have Patrik Elias, Elias Lindholm and Hampus Lindholm.

Almost as awesome as having Kalou, Malouda and Kalouda.

Hopefully it doesn't get to that. As I understand it, they would postpone the draft completely until a new CBA is in place. I would guess that in the event of a 2005-esque lottery that the NHL would draw for draft slots and then the Devils would have a 24 hour window to decide whether to forfeit the pick. In 2005, I think there was about a week between the lottery drawing and the draft.

......but I'm hoping the shortened season happens. I was in the midst of planning another silly sports trip and saw a pretty good opportunity. The draft in 1995 was pushed back to early July since the lockout shortened season ran a couple weeks longer than usual.

So the NHL Draft might be pushed back to July 6/7 or July 13/14. The latter weekend immediately precedes the MLB All-Star game at Citi Field.

Has anyone called and asked about tickets to the draft? How does it work? Assuming that STH get priority access?

STH should get priority. Off the top of my head, tickets to the general public are usually released in April/May depending. At this point, they don't even know when the draft day (June 28/29) might get bumped back a few weeks because of the lockout.

Craig Button's updated list: http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=49649

I wish I had remembered that the US U-18 team plays out of Ann Arbor. Could have caught a tournament game against Sweden last month. If I had planned it correctly, I could have seen 9 out of Button's top 36 in one weekend.

I really hope that Valery Nichushkin will drop ala Grigorenko and we can swoop him up in the middle of the 1st round, where I see us drafting.

I don't think Fucale's worth drafting in the first round. His wins look nice this year but his stats do not. I'm all for taking another goalie or two, but I'd rather not in the first round, though I guess that all depends where we draft.

His team's defence + system are horrible. By all means he's as solid as they get. They're lucky to have such gifted scorers
