Oddly enough he's not eligible for the AHL. He was barely 18 at the draft.

Yup. And this is his fourth year, so he should be in Europe or the AHL for the lockout next year.

Steve Michalek has arrived in Cedar Rapids and will join the Cedar Rapids Roughriders (USHL)

Thanks for the heads up. I am guessing that he's done with Harvard? Would suck to potentially get a free Ivy League education and play hockey and then not be able to.

I think I'd rather take the free education rather than the long shot to the NHL. Speaking of that, I'm surprised Joe Faust of Wisconsin turned down Princeton after the draft to go to Wisconsin.

Another Update for you: Just talked to my buddy who is a newspaper reporter in Cedar Rapids. Michalek is here but will be going back to Harvard next year

Thats very odd. I can't say I've ever seen that before. Was he just not ready for college hockey?

I suppose he's trying to either trying to see if he has what it takes to eventually go pro one day or should he focus 100% on studying. Not a bad plan, I must say.

But the USHL is a step down from NCAA.

My guess is that he will get the majority of the starts here in Cedar Rapids. He looked as if he was going to ride the pine at Harvard this year as they had a clear #1 established.

Our backup in Cedar Rapids is a kid that just turned 16 on Saturday Chris Birdsall (BC commit) who was promised 20 starts. I believe he already has 5-6 in 17 games into the season.

Playing in the USHL > not playing in college, for hockey anyway.

Thing is Michalek wasn't even the backup, he was the third string goalie.

I will let you know how he looks on Friday. CR has a game on Thursday night and I would assume he gets the start.

Johan Gustafsson and Luleå shut-out league leaders HV71 6-0, with Gunnarsson getting top pairing minutes and a +3 rating.

Stats (Swedish)

Edit: Gunnarsson changed to +2

Swedish prospects sure are reliable. Take that Finland. Give us Barkov and maybe we'll talk.

Oh yeah? Conan O'Brien disagrees. And everyone knows Conan is awesome.

But yeah, Sweden has been treating Wild well lately. That being said, Granlund and Haula haven't been exactly bad picks either.

Well as I expected, Michalek was a bit rusty last night in a 6-5 OT loss. But the 6 goals should not raise alarm with you. He was hung out to dry several times by the defense and 4 of the 6 goals were odd man rushes or breakaways.

One cause for concern to me was that he goes to his knees very very early and often. When he does this, his glove comes down with it. 2 goals beat him High Glove side.

Steve is very quick laterally and from his knees to his skates. He will be an asset here once he gets the hang of USHL play.
