Now that im home, i wasnt impressed by horak tonight. ferland wasnt what i expected. didnt seem like reinhart got a lot minutes which is disappointing. really wasnt a great game from either team, just seemed like toronto got he bounces.

hopefully.ill go again when they come back in spring. sven is really impressive live. yiu could tell he is a level above everyone else on the ice. im now convinced he is nhl ready.

From Elliotte Friedman's 30 thoughts:

Quote:
12. Two years ago, Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford explained his belief that you cannot truly judge a defenceman until he turns 24. Rutherford says it's the hardest pro position to learn. While in special cases some become early superstars, you can find a diamond in the rough by waiting a little.

13. I was reminded of that while watching Calgary prospect TJ Brodie of the Abbotsford Heat. He started the 2010-11 season with the Flames and there were coaches saying he was ready for the big league. It didn't work out. Now he's 22, coming off a season where he dressed for 54 NHL games, playing very well for the stingiest defensive team in the AHL's Western Conference. The Rutherford theory is strong in this one.

I believe it's players like Brodie and Horak who will benefit mostly from this lockout, due to the expeience gained in the AHL. It will make them better players.

I'm not going to lie, I gotta say the same for Bartschi. I have been a little relieved to see him gain experience in the AHL instead of jumping in right into the NHL. Let him be a leader on a pro team, now I really feel he'll have a more significant impact with the big club.

Great drive to the net by Baertschi, which led to a rebound slammed in by Breen! Another Heat shutout? Good job Danny Taylor!

Strong defensive game for the boys! Bring on the Rampage!

It's so quiet around here lol.

What a drive by Baertschi, followed by a rebound goal by Breen.

Beartschi is the top scorer for the Heat. He is 20th in scoring, but 3rd in rookie scoring.

You can put it in the win column! Heat tie it up with 13 seconds left! Baertschi scores in the shootout to keep it going, and Carter Bancks wins it!

What a relentless effort tonight!

Barry Brust making history tonight too!!!!! Love this team

Wow, I couldn't watch the game so I kept pushing refresh and once I saw 14 seconds left and it was still 2-1, so I finally turned off the computer. What a surprise waking up to it though!

Hi guys,

After hearing Brust (former Senator farmhand) broke the shutout record, I checked out the Abbotsford team at AHL stats, and have some questions about the team. I'm amazed that 2 non-prospect AHL vet goalies (Brust and Taylor) have such incredible stats. I would assume that the team is historically great defensively (for the AHL).

Is this more a result of an incredible defense corps (like Scranton Penguins), or more overall team defense and system?

I know of Brodie; I assume he having is a great year? Is he a complete 2-way defenseman, or does he lean more to great defense? Highly mobile or average? The other D I'm unfamiliar with. Which D are prospects that are having great years?

Sorry for so many questions, I like to keep tabs on Calgary and Winnipeg (my favourite western teams). It's nice the see the Flames finally have some excellent prospects.

Under Troy Ward the team has preached defense first.

It is more of a result in team defense as Troy Ward (head coach) is a great coach at getting everyone to buy in and he loves back checking forwards. That said Taylor has simply been on fire since joining the Heat and deserves a lot of the credit as well.

Brodie is really more of a 2-way D he loves to play offensively but won't hurt you playing defense either.

Our other 2 prospects on the team on defense are Breen and Lamb
Breen was never drafted but since being signed as been nothing if not physical he isn't afraid to use his body around the net and is probably our most consistent defensive defenseman.Lamb is making his transition from the NCAA to the AHL he struggled the first few games in my opinion but since they he has become a consistent defenseman that makes few mistakes if any.

Answers in bold.

Heat lose in OT against Areo's. Areo's set a record by scoring within 5 seconds of the OT period.

How long will Nemisz still be out and do you guys still expect him to become a solid NHL'er for the Flames?

Not sure how much longer he's out, and it depends what you classify as a solid NHLer. I think he'll be an effective 4th liner, and possibly even a 3rd liner, but expectations aren't really any higher than that.

He should be a solid 3rd line player and penalty kill specialist.

Not too bad considering 3 games in 3 nights all going into overtime. I'll take 5 of 6 points like that anytime

Im not very high on him to be honest. He actually does have some good qualities, he is decent defensively, and has a good amount of grit.

I don't see his scoring translating to the NHL at all though. I think he will be a useful 4th line guy, maybe 3rd line if his scoring translates.

Decent young player but I don't think he will be anything special.

Thanks guys.

Do you have any comparisons for him. Who does his game and potential remind of current NHL'ers?

I think he will end up like Moss and plays a lot like him. He can play any position and do anything but doesn't do anything especially well.

I actually think Moss is an excellent comparison. I think Nemisz has slightly better hands.

Habs fan here.

I don't remember who the Flames drafted with the 2nds got along with Horak for Erixon, but Horak > Erixon alone.

Horak + two 2nd round picks. (Granlund + Wotherspoon)

I like Horak, but Erixon is a much better prospect than he is. It's quite unfortunate, because I'd much rather have the defender than the winger.

I couldn't disagree more we got Granlund + Wotherspoon + Horak and I would give up all 3 for Erixon he is a great offensive defenseman.

I'd rather have Horak straight up over Erixon any day of the week. Having talent is an obvious key to becoming a pro, but equally important is the players attitude. Erixon will never be a winner, he's a poor teammate, and he has the attitude of entitlement. Horak is a hard worker, coachable, and he's quite skilled.

Down the road, Erixon may very well become the better player at his respective position, but you can win with guys like Horak and I'd take him on my side any time.

Erixon had a bad attitude but if you see anything he has said since being traded by New York the kid as grown up alot. He showed up to Columbus didn't complain and has been a great player for them from all accounts. What he did was real ****** but I believe he was just listening to his father and like more young adult males he believed his father knew best. I think it is a huge mistake to generalize and say he will never be a winner because of one ****** thing he did in his life (its like saying because Iggy held out for money he couldn't be a good captain). Did Erixon have an entitlement problem? Yes, has he grown as a person and adjusted his attitude? Yes.
