This is crazy, it can't be just for Jones. It has to be multiple cases.

I suspect Portland will appeal and keep a 1st rounder or two, but still, that probably destroys any hopes of being good once Rattie, Pouliot and Jones leave.

I am hearing unequivocally that WHL audit of Portland did not turn up any irregularities with acquisition/signing of Seth Jones.

Also, the Winterhawks made the playoffs every year that Dubinsky was on the team. Not quite a "garbage" team at that time.
I told ya so hahah.... I certainly called this one

Wow, that seems incredibly harsh. That's a franchise-neutering event if true.

We'll probably never know officially.

For example, travel subsidies for parents is believed to be one aspect of violation but to what level did alleged violations take place?

Didn't the article specify they had looked at their spending over the last 4 years or something? So loosing 4 years worth of picks seems to fit the crime.

Obviously if the league came down this hard then they have the evidence alot of stuff happened... The rumor has been around for YEARS that they are doing something fishy. Nobody should feel sorry for this franchise because they have horribly broken all rules and should be punished hard. I absolutely love it. I am so happy the WHL has come down hard on Portland. League made a great example not to F@#& around!!!

The wording in this part of the statement is interesting:
Quote:
WHL Commissioner Ron Robison has suspended the Portland Winterhawks from participating in the first five rounds of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft
http://whl.ca/article/whl-sanctions-...nd-winterhawks

Notice that it later says they will forfeit their 2014-2017 first rounders, but doesn't say they'll forfeit all of their picks in 2013 up to the fifth round.
Sounds like they can still trade them but that they cannot select anyone, even if they own a draft pick belonging to another team.

Holy crap. Five first rounders is a bit harsh. Best enjoy this year and next, the Hawks are going to suck for a while.

No they wont be able to trade them. That would be pointless if they could.

I wish they'd find another way to punish them than taking away picks like that - it really punishes the fans more than anything.

I really, really, really would like to see what was done, if for no other reason than my own personal knowledge. This organization has never given off that vibe to me so i'm a little surprised. That said, when you are able to recruit an inordinate number of US players; there is likely a reason for that. Portland is an excellent city, a historic franchise and a great market to play in. There are plenty of good markets in the WHL though so any kind of outlier like we've seen is likely to arouse suspicion.

I don't think this is fatal to Portland but they are going to have to dig themselves out in a few years. It appears to revolve around Johnson which is sad because he seemed to be such a nice individual. Rules are rules though and we lose the integrity of competition when they are broken. Just sad to see it happen in my own town. Especially when a once proud franchise had just been picked up and dusted off. Without Gallacher and company there would not likely be a WHL franchise in Portland.

The crazy thing is that Portland wont suck right away from this. Alot of the investigating going on is how they were able to get certain players to join their team. They signed a ton of top american prospects(that apparently only were to play NCAA, but weirdly enough signed with portland) the past few years and are STACKED with unreal 16 and 17 year olds. Portland will still be tops in the league for a few more years and then start feeling the wrath of the punishment in like 4 years when they dont have any of these top young prospects coming in

It's harsh but it had to be done. If you want to make sure teams get the point, you make them hurt. It looks good on them. It must be really bad considering the coach/GM is suspended for the rest of the season. This is a franchise killer. They'll be lucky to avoid the cellar the next 5-7 years. They better win it all this year because they won't come close for the next decade. Also I would've forced them to trade the players that were involved in this.

Jones doesnt come from a poor family so IF he did get paid it would have to be a substancial amount..Otherwise whats the incentive to not go to college.

To see a significant and steady stream of American players to a single CHL franchise (even one based in the U.S.) is very unusual.

I bet it was Ryan Johansen. Drafted in the 5th round of the WHL draft then in the top 5 in the NHL draft.
