The Winterhawks say violations involve: Paying for family flights, cellphone for captain, paying for 1 week of summer training for 2 players

It must be more serious than this ^^

Quote:
The Winterhawks were found to have committed the following violations:

• A player contract signed in 2009, involving flights for the player’s family and a summer training program
• Over the last five years, seven families were provided flights 2-4 times per season based on financial need and their distance from Portland
• Twice in the last five years the team paid for two players to each have a one-week summer training regimen
• The Winterhawks provided a cell phone for its team captain for a period of three seasons

Meh, he was taken in the seventh round because he was undersized and playing AA hockey.
He played junior A and committed to Northeastern, but had a late growth spurt.

one thing that is bothering me is when i read on other sites how people keep saying the league came down on them too hard and they feel bad for the fans. That is ridiculous... the fans should by no means be mad at the league, they should be absolutely furious with the ownership and other members of the Portland Winterhawks for breaking RULES that were put into place.

Those violations don't sound anything bad at all?

You don't lose 9 picks for nothing...

Portland won't suck and they won't stop... No team that has will... The money for the owners is that good...

Look for a Q team to go down next... SJ or QC...

The whl should be ashamed of themselves.Players getting paid penuts at the same time charging 20-40 dollars a game.Traveling 10 hrs plus on a road trip in dangerous areas due to weather and at same time being forced to go to school. These people are between 16-20 yrs old. They should be paid double of what their being paid.As for free education I urge people to read small print.Another Question why can't the players get cash instead of education it they want?I know the answer do the directors of chl and whl know the answer?Another point Guy Lafleur was paid 25 thousand and received a new car for the Quebec Remparts. You see and the late 60's the quebec league was struggling many of to frenchmen like Dionne played in ohl but Lafleur saved the Quebec League and became an icon

Those violations don't seem to match the punishment IMO.

From the WHL's press release:

"The Western Hockey League will not make any further public comments on this matter."

Perhaps their reasoning could not withstand public scrutiny.

It appears awfully harsh punishment for what amounts to a few flights, a cell phone, and a few strength training sessions. I know it's against the rules, but suspension for the year, losing all those draft picks? Seems too severe if that really is all there is to it.

It's obviously not for Seth Jones, you don't even need MacKenzie saying that to know that. He never said he would definitely go to the NCAA, and all his comments were "We'll wait till my draft year" or that he really liked the WHL push.

There's probably more grievences than just the ones they listed but I would bet they will never talk about those, as they're likely tampering issues.

yeah so instead of not being part of any violations he could get drunk and stick his head up his arse during the next lockout like Toews did.

Regarding the fine, this is either not the full list, or its a move by the WHL to "prevent" future violations.

It is for some of the guys they got out of College like Wrenn and Reid. It is also for how they are recruiting alot of guys from the US or who are "college" committed. They got a ton of really quality kids to sign whom they listed like Iverson,Schornborn,DeLeo, and Bittner. They have been going after other guys to like Dylan Chanter,Ryan Collins,Jack Dougherty,Jack Glover,Nick Heid,Teemu Kivihalme,Ryan Norman,Fredrik Olofsson, and Alex Overhardt. All guys they listed who probably would be drafted in the top 4 rounds of the Bantam draft if they had any intention of going to the WHL

Something is and was fishy in Portland

My goodness this is infuriating. North American hockey leagues as a whole really aren't doing themselves many PR favors are they?

Break the rules, get punished. Not that hard.

Come on people, dont put the blinders up. Portland released the list of violations not the league.

Simply a PR move... there's more to the story that we wont ever know!

Get caught cheating on a test, have your arm cut off. Fair, right?

Think with me for a moment, about the sense of justice being exercised here:

"Team caught giving cell phones to players, flying players families around, and sending players to camps to improve skills. Team will forfeit $200,000 and 9 draft picks."

Sound reasonable?

Absolutely. They know the rules.

Along with that, those violations were listed by Portland. I doubt we'll hear the whole story, but I'm gonna bet there is more.

Next time they'll think before they take action.

I kind of agree with this. Red herring time.
