Sorry, this isn't his playing days money here folks. Retired athletes, even greats don't typically buy $20 mil vacation homes 6 years AFTER retirement. This is being an owner money....
I'm sure part of it is owner money. Part of it is from investments he made with his playing salary, as well as the money he's made from endorsements. Who cares what he does with the money he's earned?

Not taking sides.

You will get arguments that defense is the least productive way to stimulate an economy. Infrastructure, roads, etc. and even arenas, are more productive as a stimulus and therefore more deserving of taxpayer dollars. It has to do with how fast dollars are cycled. What is more important, economy or security?
