And has to pay for his own rehab/surgery.

Still out at least another month.

(Shades of James Sheppard, except he lost two years of playing and ended up getting traded.)

There are two issues here - the injury and how he sustained it.

In the case of any non-NHL hockey related injury, the team may suspend the player without pay until he is cleared to play.

employment as a hockey Player with the Club, including travel with his team or on business
requested by the Club) so as to render him unfit to play skilled hockey, then it is mutually agreed
that the Club shall have the right to suspend the Player for such period of disability or unfitness
,
and no compensation shall be payable for that period under this SPC.
However, if the player sustained the injury engaging in a dangerous activity prohibited in the SPC (without team consent) then the team also has the potential option to terminate the SPC for breach. It is unclear whether Wakeboarding would fall under this specific prohibition.

softball, hockey, lacrosse, boxing, wrestling or other athletic sport without the written consent of
the Club, which consent will not be unreasonably withheld.
The prohibition on dangerous activities is even broader in the MLB and NBA SPCs. The Warriors reserved the right to terminate the 6 yr / $66M contract extension that Monte Ellis' had just signed a month before after he seriously injured his ankle in a an off-season moped (yes, moped) accident - he originally claimed it was injured in a pickup basketball game. The Warriors suspended him 30 games without pay and reserved the right to terminate the contract if he did not fully heal. There were similar discussions after the Giants' Jeff Kent broke his wrist in Spring training "washing his truck" - which turned out to be doing wheelies on a motorcycle.

At first, a source close to Gudbranson said he had sustained the injury during a, "training accident," and his teammates played dumb when asked.
Nice.
