I would like to see a more heavily weighted system in favour of the worse off teams. Yes, a big part of that is being a Jets fan, but I also don't think it's fair the way the odds stack up using the previous system for already good teams to all of a sudden be able to get a top 5 or 10 player because of a lucky bounce.

The draft is the mechanism for teams near the bottom to rebuild, so I don't agree with a system that changes that concept and gives everyone pretty decent odds (3 balls to 1 ball isn't such a huge difference), to draft low.

In 2005 the order (and number of balls was):
1 - Pitts (3 Balls)
2 - Anaheim (2 balls)
3 - Carolina (2 balls)
4 - Minnesota (2 balls)
5 - Montreal (1 ball)
6 - Columbus (3 balls)
7 - Chicago (2 balls)
9 - Atlanta (traded to San Jose) (2 balls)
10 - Vancouver (1 ball)
11 - LA (2 balls)
12 - San Jose (traded to Atlanta, then NYR) (1 ball)
13 - Buffalo (3 balls)
14 - Washington (1 ball)
15 - NYI (1 ball)
16 - NYR (Traded to Atlanta) (3 balls)
17 - Phoenix (2 balls)
18 - Nashville (2 balls)
19 - Detroit (1 ball)
20 - Philadelphia (traded to Florida) (1 ball)
21 - Toronto (1 ball)
22 - Boston (1 ball)
23 - NJ (1 ball)
24 - St. Louis (1 ball)
25 - Edmonton (2 balls)
26 - Calgary (2 balls)
27 - Colorado (traded to Washington) (1 ball)
28 - Dallas (1 ball)
29 - Florida (Traded to Philadelphia) (1 ball)
30 - TB (1 ball)

There was 4 "3 ball" teams, and only 2 of them picked in the top 10, and one went to 16 where 5 "1 ball" teams drafted ahead of them. That isn't right to me.

I would rather see them expand the number of balls to say 6 or more, and take away a ball for top picks or playoff appearances over the last few years the way they are doing now. That way, with teams at larger extremes (5 or 6 balls to 1 as opposed to 3 to 1) you would hopefully see more bottom teams picking low.

Or preferably, I would rather them change the system altogether if they wanted to keep the 1-3 ball system, and make it so they do 3 separate draws. First they draw between all the teams with 3 balls, and those teams draft first. Then the teams with 2 balls are drawn and organized and get the next spots, and then the teams with 1 ball.

So if Cal, Car, Clb, Dal, Min, Tor, and Wpg each have 3 balls, these teams get drawn and pick 1-7. Ana, Col, Fla, NYI, St. L, and TB then are drawn and pick 8-13. The rest of the teams are then drawn and pick from 14-30.

I think that is more fair, as it guarantees that the lower picks go to the right "range" of teams, but still allows some random movement via chance. A team than would most likely be picking 25+ still has a chance to move down to 14. I think that is more fair than allowing a random chance that an already very good team picks in the top 10, while a bad team gets bumped out.

I would be absolutely thrilled to see the draft work this way...

I agree it's an interesting idea. It would help get closer to the results you'd hope to see, teams that have been terrible the past few years getting a player that might help turn their fortunes. Certainly would be more effective at getting that result than the previous system.

Was the lottery televised when the Pens were awarded first overall? If it wasn't I can understand the controversy, for the lack of transparency.

Also, is every position determined by the lottery or only a select few, ie top 10, after which they default to the previous year's standings?

Also I'm surprised there were only 3 different types of odds (1 ball, 2 balls, 3 balls) or am I misunderstanding?

The lottery was done behind closed doors, as they wanted to reveal the picks in ascending order (and since the first ball picked was first overall, that wouldn't work on camera). However, it was run by a third party, not the NHL itself.

hey if miss this coming year and they are still dug in next year ...ie they miss another season....

there will be so many draftees of high caliber (3 yrs worth) that it wont really matter where you pick in the top 20

on a side note it will be hard to pick the Cdn juniors team 2014

I posted this same idea earlier on this thread. no good team should get in the top 10 or top 15. dont leave it up to chance. crappy teams deserve to draft first. base the 3 different groups on playoffs, 1st overall picks, and what not just like they did for the last lockout. i would hate it if stacked teams like phi or nyr got a top 10 pick

Detroit makes out like bandits and Columbus doesn't get the top 5 pick they needs.

A Jones and Smith future top pairing would be ballin'.

I hope they use a different system than last time. Doing one random draw leads to some random results. Frankly, it's pretty dumb that teams like the islanders and Winnipeg could end up in the high twenties. I did a simulation where Pittsburgh got first, Edmonton second, and then Toronto, the isles, jets and Columbus' ball all ended up in the twenties.

Would you accept getting the 3rd overall guarnteed if it meant your rival/most hated team got #1 overall guaranteed?

Yes. In a heartbeat.

(I don't really think the Sharks have a 'rival'. Most hated team is Dallas, I guess. Sure, why not).

Guys...there was / will be no season. Theres no such thing as a crappy team. Nodody deserves anything over anyone else. Hell im an Ottawa fan, but if we were to get the 30th pick, and a team like LA or NJ got the first overall then so be it. Thats what the lottery balls came up with. Theres winners and theres losers just like in any sort of gambling, which the lottery basically is.

Crappy teams were awareded with good picks in 2012. Thats what they earned. You never know what could have happened in 2013. Edmonton could have won the cup. You just dont know, so ita unfair to give a totally unrelated team a double prize for being garbage.

Poor Blue Jackets... epic win for Wings and Rangers
As a Coyotes fan I approve of this order. We must absolutely use this order. It's the only fair and reasonable way. Clearly Curtis Lazar belongs with Henrik Samuelsson on a Dave Tippett team. Pretty obvious. In fact, let's just go ahead and have the draft tomorrow. Or maybe just assign Lazar to Phoenix and the rest of yall can just figure out whatever.
