Why don't teams run more?

I've always wondered why teams don't run more? Looking at AL success rates the best defensive stats still give the running team a 45% success rate. But, a lightning quick runner like Rajai Davis Runs only 48% of the time. OBP usually only between 35-40% so why not maximize it?

You have to successfully steal 75-80% of the time for it to be worthwhile. If you don't have players that can do that, it makes no sense.

Rajai's success rate in stealing bases wouldn't be as high if he didn't pick his spots as much.

I think you can expect the Jays to run alot this season tho. They should have 3 guys on the team next season with the speed to steal 40-50 bases(+Gose in AAA) and maybe 6 with the speed to steal 20 or more. Clearly they wont all get the opportunity to do so but it seems AA is trying to build the team with alot of speed on the bases.

It's also rough on the body. Guys don't want to shorten their careers by even a year anymore. Too much cash would be lost.

Not to mention that the fans/media will cry bloody murder at the manager when a star player gets seriously hurt stealing 2nd in june. All the talk of running more will suddenly disappear

Oh I agree, Baltimore, KC, and Oakland are the only teams statistically you shouldn't run on. But the other 11 teams you have MINIMUM a 60% success rate. I know Toronto is going to run all over my team the Red Sox and their piss poor 81% success rate.

You're wasting outs if you have a 60% success rate.

It depends on who is up to bat ? If Bautista is up to bat and Rajai is on first, why risk getting tossed out ? You have to pick your spots.

Excellent point.

I didn't mind last year if McLouth ran with Hardy at the plate. I was less happy when Davis or Jones were up. It's constantly changing, and rarely is it always smart to run or not run; it is very situational.

At the same time Rajai being a threat to run can help Bautista get better pitches.

It's a fine line.

Like was stated earlier, if you don't have at least a 75% success rate, you're doing more harm than good by running.

When you talk about the AL half of the teams give you 75% , when averaging success rate and failure rates most of the time you get 10-25% for half of the players.

Also I want to see ERA & WHIPS of pitchers after a steal

if davis is on first and bautista is in bautista-mode, bautista probably gets pitched to.

if davis steals second, bautista might get bonds'ed.
