Mike Richter will be at the SmithHaven Mall in Smithtown today from 2:30 - 4:30. That's only about 10 minutes from me and I was about to hop in my car, until I found out it costs $75 bucks for an autograph. Are they serious? In the midst of a lockout they are charging to get a players autograph? I'm sorry, but thats ridiculous -- and then the NHL wonders why they aren't popular.

It's not the Rangers or NHL. Most player appearances for autographs charge you. Store plays Richter a flat fee for showing up and signing, a figure usually in the thousands. Based on that, the store sets the price per autograph based on what they think will get them their money back/make money. Most times they don't make a profit but they use the autograph signing to gain exposure for their store and to get people into the store to buy things.

I just think whoever is charging has a lot of nerve because of the fact were in a lockout. Just my opinion.
Wouldn't it make more sense to make it free, so more fans come in and buy more merchandise? I would have easily went for free and bought a $40 shirt for him to sign.

Well that's on Richter and his camp than. Store just charges based on what it cost them to bring Richter in. If he was going to sign for free, it probably would have cost nothing for an autograph.
Thing is the store is laying out thousands for him to show up. If no one buys anything substantial, they're screwed and just lost thousands.
I understand where you're coming from 88. Fact is, people are going to pay, and the store knows that, so they charge. It would be awesome to bring Richter in and not charge anything, but they need a return on their investment and they're going to get it however they can. So, cover fee + any amount of Richter related store income = cost of Richter.
Dagoon would be a great person to talk to about this subject, though I haven't seen him around the boards in a long while now. Plus I'm sure when he does come back, he won't really visit the OT thread.
Paid autographs are like prostitutes as opposed to a real girlfriend/boyfriend. It's really the same IMO. When I'm standing somewhere for hours and gets an autograph from my favorite athlete and he does so with a smile and appreciation for his fans, that's what it's about.

Question for all you smarty pants, do the points carry over to my NY license?

It's different for every state, but as a New York resident, here are the particulars:

I bought 34 pounds of chicken today and the guy just stared at me for a few seconds before getting me to repeat how much I wanted. "34, good sir" I repeated followed by an assuring nod and point to the display filled with chicken drumsticks. He went into the back and grabbed a box of chicken drumsticks marked "apx. 30lbs" and threw it on the scale and weighed a 4 pound bag of chicken drumsticks and inputted it as 34 pounds. That was the most expensive 4 pound bag of chicken I've ever bought He had to follow me to the cashier to make sure security doesn't mistaken me for a chicken thief. The whole thing was juxtaposed with me buying a single peach because I wanted a peach
