Russell Martin is not worth 8.5 million. His power numbers were aided by playing in a bandbox, while his overall hitting was terrible. If it was a 1-year deal for the Yanks, sure. But 2 years at that pay? Nope.

Cervelli isn't a major downgrade and I wouldn't be shocked at all if they worked out a trade for another C.

^Great article; it's long, but the gist is that Martin's average offense/excellent defense combo makes him easily worth his new contract. The Yankees are on their way to looking like morons in this situation. The Pirates reap the rewards.

Given the Pirates catching situation and the complete dearth of catchers on the market...I'm very happy with this deal.

I thought for sure someone would overpay out the ass for Martin because of the catching market, but that's a pretty reasonable deal. I won't jump to saying it was a 'steal' as that SI article painted it to be, but he's a major upgrade over what we had in Barajas in every way, shape, and form.

McKenry...love the guy, but he's at his best when he's playing twice a week...and he's putrid defensively.

On a non-sequitor note...I wonder if McKenry will give up his number. Both guys wear #55.

What about Sanchez? Could he be ready? Maybe we can trade for D'Arnaud from the Blue Jays.
No chance. Jays have said they see Buster Posey potential in him and Arencibia goes before he does IMO

Cervelli is horrible. He brings nothing at the plate and is a downgrade defensively. He's a back up catcher at best.

well, this is certainly a nice surprise to wake up to as a Pirates fan. How the hell did the Yankees let him walk?

Not unless you willing to pay a massive price.

J.P. Arencibia or Buck are quite available tho.

Yankees need a catcher so that takes Arencibia out of the equation.

That's a good article. I understand with the market for catchers is saturated so a team like PIT had to spend, but I wouldn't pay Russell Martin 8.5.

You have seen him more than I have, but from what I've seen, I really like his raw abilities. I'll take your word on it, though.

In this weak catching market, I think that Martin's defense makes him worth $8.5. His (already weak) offensive numbers will surely go down outside of Yankee Stadium though.

I'm with darko, Cervelli is not a major league player. I appreciate his energy and uncanny ability to run into a seeing eye single at just the right moments, but he is a horrible all-around catcher. Put it this way: he was beaten out for a roster spot by Chris freaking Stewart last year.

I think that Cashman will trade for a stopgap catcher and give Austin Romine a year in the minors to prove that he can be the long term solution. Wouldn't be surprised to see Ramon Hernandez end up in pinstripes.
