I think Jack Johnson is going to turn some heads now that he is the guy in Columbus. He was plagued with injuries early in his career and then had to ride shotgun to Doughty. When Doughty was out, Johnson shined. I'm excited to see how he does in the future.

Suter - Yandle
Johnson - Johnson
McDonagh - Goligoski

#2 would be more interesting. I'm going to say Yandle.

Yandle is one of the most underrated players on these boards. The guy is an elite defenceman and only 26 years old.

I don't see what either Johnson has done to earn the automatic spots on the team that this thread seems to be giving them. They might at best make third pair. There's no way either one is better than McDonagh, Carlson, Byfuglien, Shattenkirk, and Yandle atm.

Jack looks good in Columbus, so we'll see what he can do, and I'm not counting him out, but both are FAR from shoe-ins.

Uhhh, what? Yandle was voted the 10th best defensemen in the league here earlier this summer. I'd say that's more than fair for a sheltered offensive defensemen.

JJ > Shattenkirk and EJ > Carlson, Byfuglien would be an offensive specialist and both JJ/EJ play better defense.

So I'm really not sure where you're going with this on the whole. Especially given that McDonagh has ONE season where he was better than either of them and it wasn't exactly a leaps and bound argument given that JJ and EJ both played like top pairing guys to end the year for their teams.

Considering JJ has a serious shot at being one of the team Alternates or even Captain playing for the US team in the WC 5 of the last 6 years and for all of the U20/U18 squads and EJ being at the last Olympics (and being of age to play in the next 3 potentially) it makes plenty of sense to consider both of them with spots.

Guys like Shattenkirk, Carlson, Bogosian, Fowler even McDonagh have to prove themselves over the next two years far more than JJ/EJ do.

I can't believe you don't have Bogosian on your list. He is a lot closer to making the team than a lot of the players you have listed.

maybe being 21 and 23 years of age being on the silver medal team has something to do with it. mcdonagh, carlson and shattenkirk haven't been as successful in longevity compared to the jack johnson, i'm sure there's a question mark with erik and how he plays however if he starts the following season on a high note he'll make the team. i'm unsure of how byfuglien would do on international ice. and i think that the majority of people believe yandle is better than the rest.
