I'm pretty sure that's where a high poise comes in handy. My higher poise teams seem to in general do a lot better in overtime and playoffs.

Aw, ****. How could I forget about him? I'm starting year three already, so you're a bit late.

Anyway, despite picking up Milan Michalek for only two 2nd round picks (Ottawa offered it to me) my Blues were in 12th place at the trade deadline. I decided to start a mini-rebuild and made a couple trades:

Trade #1

Louis Leblanc
2014 First Round Pick

David Backes
scrub goalie

Trade #2

2014 First Round Pick

Martin St Louis
David Perron

It was pretty lame to send St Louis back to Tampa after only a year, but I really wanted to get another high draft pick. I gave them Perron because he was playing horrible with only 22 points on the second line. Their pick ended up being fourth overall, so I traded it along with Montreal's pick (22nd) to Vancouver for the 1st overall. Obviously I selected Sam Reinhart. (66 overall, 4.5 yellow stars) Our original pick turned out to be the 7th overall, and with it I selected Aaron Ekblad. (58 overall, 4 yellow stars)

The team looks a fair bit different than it did going into last year. Here it is now:

Schwartz (82) - Berglund (84) - Michalek (84)
Oshie (84) - Leblanc (83) - Stewart (84)
Sobotka (82) - Sonne (79) - Grachev (79)
Shattock (77) - Mcrae (78) - Boll (74)

Shattenkirk (86) - Pietrangelo (90)
Sbisa (84) - Cole (84)
Russell (80) - some guy I don't remember (78)

Halak (84)
Allen (77)

Just won the Cup for the second straight year(2015-16), my lineup was really good:

Stamkos(91)-Spezza(87)-Silfverberg(86)
Benn(88)-Turris(87)Zibanejad(85)
Grant(79)-Smith(80)-Stone(79)
Hoffman(78)-Prince(77)-Jokinen(79)

Hedman(87)-Karlsson(90)
Claesson(83)-Ceci(83)
Boroweiki(84)-Giordano(84)

Lehner(90)
Dansk(78)

Stamkos, Ceci, Zibanejad, Karlsson and Silfverberg all went up by 1 overall, Hedman jumped to a 91. Stone jumped to 84, Reinhart and Mackinnon both jumped from 76 to 82 with amazing offensive stats.

I tried to trade for Crosby, Pittsburgh is freaking in love with this guy... I offered them Spezza(87, 33 years old), Benn(88, 26 years old), Stone(84, 24 years old) and Dansk(80, 22 years old) for Crosby(95, 28 years old). They wanted all my players I offered but they wouldn't accept it, Crosby's trade value is a full bar, whereas Stone/Benn/Spezza trade value is almost 2 full bars put together. I even added 2 later 1st rouders(the ones that are almost half bar trade value) and still they said no. I know it Crosby and all, but I offered an elite 1st line for him...

I don't freakin understand how I lost 7 in a row and keep loosing in Be A GM Mode with a lineup with players like: Crosby, Nash, Hall, Gagne, Erhoff, Giordano, Ekman-Larsson, Harding, Pavalec. Also have decent depth with Burrows, Kunitz, Mcclement, Greene, Fistric. I'm in year 4 in a Fantasy Draft GM with Tampa. I started out with Edmonton and had players like Giroux, Thorton(eventually traded), Havlat, Heatley, Markov(Eventually traded), Krownwall, Rielly, Murray, Yakupov and a boat load of great prospects. And In those 3 years with them I made it to the 4th round, DNQ and 3rd round(I sim it). I just don't understand how I am loosing....

Maybe it was your strategies that threw you off. In past GMs it seems that the strategy has to match with the kind of team you're rolling with. In my Devils Gm I was stacked everywhere but I just seemed to not be able to win games and my goalies were letting in too many goals then I realized I was running a 2-3 defense leaving nobody to backup my goalie.

Started a GM as Washington. Simming the first season, we finished in last place.. I had made a few trades during the season, picking up 2 more first round picks for 2013. At the draft, Washington traded a first round pick (23rd) and 2 3rds for the 20th overall pick. Washington had been scouting Zach Fucale, who was projected to go 22nd and felt that they should move up a few spots in hopes of getting him.

2013 NHL Draft:
1st overall - Nathan MacKinnon (73ovr 5green)
3rd overall - Jonathan Drouin (76ovr 4.5green)
20th overall - Zach Fucale (55ovr 4green)

At the 2014 Draft, the Washington Capitals made a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets.. Columbus received Nicklas Backstrom in exchange for Aleksander Barkov (62ovr 5y) and their 1st in 2014 and 2015. During free agency, the Washington Capitals signed Corey Perry to a 8yr/$8.990 contract.

2014 NHL Draft:
1st overall (from Columbus) - Aaron Ekblad (66ovr 4.5green)
27th overall - Joshua Ho Sang (72ovr 4yellow)

2015 NHL Draft:
1st overall (Columbus) - Connor McDavid (79ovr 5green)
12th overall - Jeremy Roy (72ovr 4green)

I'll post the lineup heading into the 2015/16 season next... as well as salary.

I've never fiddled with the strategies at all. I just feel like the sim engine is garbage, even if you have Stamkos, Crosby, Ovechkin, Karlsson, Doughty, Price ect...

Nice! I always love getting sick stud future players. Connor McDavid??? I thought they didn't update the rosters?

I saw Backstrom get to 90 overall in year 2 from 2BC, hmm bold move.

They didn't, I downloaded the rosters from MattG123.

I actually didn't think twice about offering the trade. I knew I was giving up a valuable piece of the team, but getting Barkov in return was well worth it. It saved me $6 million in salary, allowing me to get Perry.. and then the picks got me two AMAZING players!! And even if I had gotten mid-round picks, I still was happy with getting Barkov.

So in total, I managed to get: Aleksander Barkov, Connor McDavid, Aaron Ekblad, and the $ to sign Corey Perry... all for getting rid of Nicklas Backstrom!! Not bad..

Since two people have already asked for the link to MattG123's roster.. I figure I'll just post it so everyone can get it if they want it..

Roster: http://www.ultimatehockey.info/rosterdownloads

Instructions: http://www.ultimatehockey.info/nhl-12-instructions

And in case you're interested, they did add some of the NCAA/US-NTDP players in the game.. They scattered them through the European leagues.

I think one of my favorite parts of Be a GM is finding that one line that clicks and leads you to winning a cup after an amazing season.

Yes. He and some others had started working on one for 360, but the others basically stopped doing anything on it.. so he doesn't plan on releasing one any time soon. Sorry.

I used his rosters back in 09 and I think 10. They were pretty good for the most part, but way too many prospects became superstars. I like it better when most top prospects end up as good 2nd/3rd liners with the odd superstar/bust.

How are the new ones in this respect?

FAMILIAR FACES HOT COMMODITY ON TRADE MARKET
December 3, 2012

The recent trend amongst NHL GMs appears to be re-acquiring assets that were previously let go to unrestricted free agency. Buffalo recently acquired veteran defenseman Toni Lydman, who spend 5 seasons with the Sabres, from the Ducks for prospect winger Corey Tropp. A few days later, Pittsburgh re-acquired veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar, who spent 5 seasons with the Penguins, from Ottawa in exchange for star winger James Neal, fresh off a 40-goal season, although Neal is only on pace for about 20 goals so far this year.

The Gonchar-Neal trade was met with much emotion by fans of both clubs; Ottawa fans elated over obtaining a 25-year-old star sniper to play alongside Jason Spezza while Pittsburgh fans are the polar opposite, furious and dumbfounded by the trade.

We asked a popular NHL analyst for his thoughts. "Acquiring a player with whom you've had prior experience with is a safe bet. You know what you'll get out of a player that you had in the organization for several years. That said, why you trade a guy like James Neal for a 38-year-old Sergei Gonchar is just beyond comprehension."

The strategies do matter I had Ovie 94 Backstrom 90 Eriksson or Mackinnon 86 or 85 with defensive strategies because my defense was stronger and Ovie got 70 and the others were under 60. Another year it was Ovie 94 Backstrom 90 Mackinnon 86 very aggressive and Ovie got 90 Backstrom 83 ad Mackinno 76

I haven't updated in a while, so I figure I might as well. During the last season (year three), my St Louis Blues were pretty bad, and finished third-last. I traded Milan Michalek, Kris Russel, and 2nd round pick to Winnipeg in exchange for Vitali Tolpeko, a 21-year old Russian power-forward with 4.5 star potential. He jumped to 85 overall in the offseason.

At the draft I had the third overall pick, and I selected a left winger named Jorgen Backlund from Sweden. He is also a power-forward, and came out of the draft at 74 overall, with 4.5 star potential. He is currently playing on the top line in the AHL alongside Sam Reinhart, who is now 75 overall with equal potential.

Here are my St Louis Blues in the fourth year:

Schwartz (85) - Leblanc (84) - Tolpeko (85)
Oshie (83) - Berglund (84) - Stewart (84)
Sobotka (82) - Nigro (79) - Shattock (81)
Sonne (79) - Mcrae (78) - Boll (74)

Shattenkirk (86) - Pietrangelo (89)
Sbisa (83) - Cole (84)
Holzer (80) - Polak (78)

Allen (82)
Halak (84)

We have a pretty good record so far. Over .500, but I don't remember what our record is or how far I've simmed. I'll post again at the end of the season.

My top line always as the playmaker center and atleast 1 sniper, 2nd line has 1 sniper and 1 playmaker with a 2 way forward with good offensive stats. My 3rd line depends on my team, if I'm a good team my 3rd line will be like a 2nd line but if I'm middle of the pack team my 3rd line will be shutdown line. 4th line I just throw anyone with good D on.

On D, I always have a DFD/OFD or TWD/OFD as my top pairing and any other combination for the others(except 2 OFD)
