Based on hfboards alone, Rundblad. Some thought he would be better than Karlsson...
Factoring in local media and general fanbase hype, Kaigorodov.

I haven't been a member of hfboards long, but in general, it's Daigle AINEC.

Since I signed up, it has to be Rundblad or Filatov.

Kaigorodov for sure.

- His breakout season was during the 04-05 lockout, it was something to talk about during those hockey starved days, naturally contributing to a lot of the hype he got
- He spent almost two full seasons in Russia after the lockout, so he spent a long time in the organization as a prospect, unlike Filatov or Bochenski who were more of a flash in the pan in terms of their time spent as Senators

Who were the other drafting options when Alexei Kaigorodov was being drafted by good ol Mucks?

He's the reason the Sens didn't draft another Russian again.

He was a colossal bust and it wasn't really until recently with Filatov that Ottawa actually looked at a russian prospect.

And I guess we wont be looking there anytime soon again!!!!

(Fun thread!)

Russians drafted by the Sens after Kaigorodov (2002):

Ruslan Bashkirov (2007)
Vitali Anikeyenko (2005)
Ilya Zubov (2005)
Dmitry Megalinsky (2005)
Kirill Lyamin (2004)
Alexander Nikulin (2004)
Igor Mirnov (2003)
Sergei Gimayev (2003)

Now if you want to say we never drafted Russians after Kaigorodov bombed, that's fair, but there's still Bashkirov. I think it's more accurate to say that we haven't looked there since Murray took over. I don't believe it's any kind of "racism" by Murray, it's simply that he recognised that we needed prospect help Right ****ing Now and we couldn't afford to wait the 4 or 5 years it would take for a Russian prospect to potentially come over.

We also too more overagers (Zach Smith, Emil Sandin, Mike Hoffman, Corey Cowick...) and less NCAA players with our higher picks, for the same reason. We needed players quickly.

I really don't remember Zent ever being hyped up. He never even put up good numbers in the AHL

Oh man, I completely forgot about Kaigorodov, but remember all the hype about him. I guess that in itself shows how much he has slid off the radar.

Not sure why anyone is picking Filatov. He was a reclamation project.

Jason Zent?

I'm guessing you don't know what "hype" is let alone "over-hype"

Dude had a pretty sick wrister though.

I think a lot of people are confusing "Over-hyped" with "Really-hyped".

One of Zent's 3 goals( I looked it up) was scored against the Rangers and I remember the MSG highlights guy was like "who?"

overhype? Rundblad wins for me, Layne Ulmer would have been interesting had hfboards existed then

Does over-hyped means hyped for nothing?

Runblad was highly hyped but there was a legit reason, and a lot of it turned into tongue in cheek stuff. Have to see how his career ends up.

I never bought into the Kaigorodov junk, and wasn't around HFBoards so wasn't infected.
I think being drafted 6th overall is a "legit reason" for hype too... ... ...

Ya I thought about Daigle first but apparently HF wasn't existing back in the days...

Why kidding about Lehner? He is seriously hyped, but like I said earlier in the thread, people might be right on this one

Let's hope that's true, the Sens haven't exactly had a great track record of developing hyped players in the past (with, of course, the exception of Spezza, Karlsson, and maybe others).

Silf is crazy hyped right now (for a fairly decent reason). If he doesn't pan out, he'll be near the top of this list.

Brennan didn't say anything bad about Karlsson. He quoted some fan in his draft article.

Imagine a clueless hockey fan...

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought of Kaigorodov.

Expected to basically walk right on to our second line.

Hrmm.

A journalist's job is to disseminate information. Brennan chose to quote an uninformed fan on Ottawa drafting Karlsson, rather than go to the experts (eg the scouting/management team) who actually had insight into why Ottawa drafted Karlsson. For that, Brennan deserves to be held accountable.
