Well Jaden Schwartz was not only captain last tourny, but probably one of the better captains team Canada's had (according to his teammates), and he's probably one of the quietest guys the Blues have, other than maybe Halak.
Every player invited has an opportunity to make the team. With that said, it is also quite apparent that players like Corrado, Wotherspoon, Sproul and even Pouliot will have to have extremely good camps to overcome the ridiculous amount of skill and depth that this country is lucky enough to have at every position.
If one of these guys outperform Dumba, then they'll take his spot as the 7th dman. That's the only way I see them on the team. No way are they taking anyone else's spot. But that will be extremely tough because Dumba was Spott's Captain in the Ivan Hlinka last year when they one gold. He even referenced that tournament in his interview today. It'll be a pretty tough feat.

This. It combines what was observed during the SSS and Canada Russia challenge - both huge factors. Also, since the SSS was so low scoring I suspect they'll use the Canada-Russia Challenge as a better benchmark as it also combined players from all 3 leagues.

While captains are generally more engaging guys, you can still be a successful captain even if you are quiet. You just have to lead by example.
I largely agree. Whether you're quiet or vocal, if you're the one guy that can be put out at any time, in any game situation, and make any on-ice unit the strongest it can possibly be, you're captain material in my book. Whether or not RNH is that guy for Canada is up for debate, obviously, but he certainly seems among the very best candidates in a pool full of captains from their respective junior squads. He's certainly the most accomplished, so there has to be a respect factor there, too.

Just to rejog your memory, Percy was assigned to shutdown Yakupov's line and he did in both games. The only reason why he's being overhyped is by people like you who keep reminding everyone he's a leaf pick.
It makes sense why Percy didn't make it, there's just way too much high end talent on the blueline. It's good to see the depth in Canada.
Yeah, I really liked what I saw from Percy. Quiet, efficient defender.
With Murray's injury I thought there'd be an opening for him, but I guess not.

Are your lines listing the centres in the middle? If so, I don't think you end up getting nearly the most out of Scheifele or Drouin by playing them on their off wing/side; which looks like an unnecessary handicap considering it impacts both lines in your top 6. Don't know if it's "better", but if those are the players to work with, it seems to make more "sense" to go:
Huberdeau - MacKinnon - Drouin (or Drouin - Huberdeau - MacKinnon, or however we shuffle it up) on a powerplay, though? That I'd certainly do. Probably with RNH and one of the RH defensemen (Drouin or RNH on the other point for lulz?).

Lidstrom talked quite a bit in the room. He wasn't a big speech guy, but he was big on preparing the team. Talking about what the Wings do well what the other team does well. A calming guy, but not as silent as a lot of people remember and when he spoke everyone listened. He didn't deliver the paint of the wall stuff that Yzerman and Draper did, but he didn't sit in the corner and he didn't just say watch what I do. One of the reasons although it was wiped out by the lockout I was looking forward to 24/7 before he retired was I think this would have showed when they followed the team. It is inaccurate from what I know of those guys to pretend Lidstrom didn't have leadership right away he didn't grow into as much as some people think. Lidstrom got an A very early in his career, it wasn't because he was just a great player. He is a very effective communicator and leader.
On this roster while I don't expect him to make the team very happy Ryan Sproul got an invite. He started the season on fire and has been very good since coming back. Really looking forward to the future pairing of Sproul and Ouellet in Detroit, Holland better not trade either.

I really want to see MacKinnon on centre. Out of all our centres he really seems to be one who benefits most from being on position. I can see Scheifele on the wing no problem, but we saw how uncomfortable MacKinnon looked at the SSS.
Murphy will only make it as the 7th defenseman PP specialist, and honestly with Reilly I don't think you need to have one. That being said, he plays for the coach/gm in the OHL so...
There is no way Spott doesn't play Murphy 5 on 5. Simply no chance. Murphy plays 40 minutes a night on the best defensive team in the OHL, and probably the best in the entire CHL. Spott clearly trusts him defensively (And anyone's who's seen him this year know's he's not a liability), he clearly will play him 5 on 5 with Canada's big guns.
Subban and binnington are both very good goalies. But what gives sub an the edge is his charecter. He's extremely calm in net and he never cracks under pressure. He is confident in every situation rather up 3 goals, down 3 goals, or tied in the gold medal game. His team feels comfertable knowing that they have a goalie who is confident he will Stop the puck.
Also, he plays on international sized ice in Belleville.. Goalies notice this a lot because some of the angles change... There will be no adjustment period for him, unlike any other candidate.
He's also the best shootout goalie, hands down... I like that considering we've gone to a few shootouts the past few years.

It's safe to say if you're the best defensemen on the best junior team defensively in the world, you'll probably do OK in the international tournement.
It's not about loyalties, it's about what you know a player can do. If a player performs poorly, they'll suffer the consequences. That's not just Murphy, that's anybody.

Murphy will be pretty easily the worst defensively in the top 6, if he doesn't produce offense in games that matter I can easily see the D coach going with the 7th guy (Dumba or Sproul imo)
