Even if his source is Jacobs himself, how could this be verified before the owners/players meeting? Unless Jacobs plans to go in and say "whatever you say, boys."
Remember that just because you don't know the answer to that question does not mean there is not an answer to it.
What's more likely:
1) Somebody told Burton something and he felt it was good enough to make a lead story on broadcast media.
2) He made it up or his source is a beer vendor at the Garden and he does not care that it's total BS.
I say #1. Whether it's a great source/lead or not remains to be seen.
You're leading with the assumption/conclusion that Burton is an idiot, which you said elsewhere, and won't entertain that there is something to his story. I'm not saying he has a terrific source, that the lockout is over, or that this is anything more than a wild rumor that he got too excited about. I have no way of knowing - neither do you - but I would find it hard to believe he would stick his neck out on this story with 0 backing to make it worth his trouble. Your counter argument amounts to "it could not be true because he's an idiot," which is kinda weak. Just because you and I don't know what negotiation may have happened today does not mean that it didn't happen.
The NHL and Bruins are leaving boatloads of money on the table. The holidays are here, it's a time of year when a lot of tix will be sold, lots of games and $ are lost, and fans are losing interest. How hard do you want to argue that it's not possible someone connected to the Bruins is leaking a little good news to get people thinking about hockey again and maybe getting into the mindset of dropping some $ in December if the lockout ends soon? I think they're priming the pump here.
Steve Burton is as honest as they get. When he speaks people take notice. Hardly an idiot.
yes. I would say agree with that.
Who the hell knows who the source is but Burton has been around the Boston sports scene for what? 25 years with Channel 4.
I grew up a Patriots fan and had known who his father was.
Those of us who followed the Red Sox 20 years ago knew that Burton was close to many Red Sox players and was in the inner circle with guys like Canseco, Vaughn, and Clemens,
Burton routinely got interviews no one else could get
as for the Bruins? well, pre internet and social media, channel 4 was over at the Garden a gazillion times for both Boston winter teams- and lets face it, if there was one reporter any owner could remember it would be Steve.
If I had to guess who his source was (I'm guessing here) its JJ. Of course, JJ may be out of touch on believing they are that close to a deal even if he said it, but Burton did not make it up and to think otherwise whoever does is just a ****ing numbnuts (I apologize saying that on the internet but if the season ever starts and you make it to a game PM and we can meet up and I'll say it to your face) I'm reading all over it aint true- well, if you don't have the source how can you even offer anything but a wait and see attitude.
as optimistic as I am I am very skeptical all is rosy over the next 48 hours- however, it does put a really interesting light on the next two days
Charlie Jacobs has been a guest on Sports Final many times. That is my guess.
good guess....Burton has probably been over there thousands of times to cover Celtics and Bruins games and practices, other events like the Tradition (I think his father got some award at one which he I'm sure accepted in his behalf)
has to be a Jacobs not only spilling beans on todays meeting, but the mood....who the hell else could it be
one thing about Senior Jacobs is he can just spout stuff and this may be one of those moments where Burton caught up and JJ told him about today and the possible prognosis
Basically I want some f----- Bruins tickets in my stocking and this better be done in time for that to happen. I am choosing to take a kick at the football with Steve Burton and hope Lucy does not pull the ball away again. 48 hours, get 'er done.
You know , they say he was the one who predicted that there would be ice on mars and that the Bruins will win their 1st cup in 39 years . So trying to predict a end to this madness would be very easy for him
Did he piss in your Cheerios? Yea so stupid he went to Northwestern and has been in this business for over 30 years and has exclusive rights to the Patriots. What a stiff.
Did he play for the Bruins? Cause i can't figure out why you care so much.
Also, what does exclusive rights to the patriots mean?
No one stupid has ever had a successful career talking about sports........
Not on my phone addition: Also, I have nothing against him personally. Personally seems like a nice guy, and he can read a teleprompter like a champ. But I've been following his career for what? 15 years at this point, and his opinions and insights into the world of sports have consistently been some of the dumbest coming from the Boston market.

I can see it now, 6 owners, a handful of players sitting in a room. The owners baffle the players with BS and overwhelm them, the players, being uneducated(not referring to scholastically) and far less informed than we have all been led to believe cave.
5-8 years from now, were back here again, with players yakking on about how they got hosed in the last lockout
