On a side note, it is possible for some players to be selected in their third year of draft eligibility. North American players born between 1/1 and 9/15 can go through three drafts. Somebody like Matt Kennedy was first eligible in 2007 but was taken in 2009 by Carolina. North American trained players born between 9/16 and 12/31 will be eligible for two drafts and can be free agents afterwards.

There's actually a separate clause regarding European trained players, the Entry Draft, and free agency. To keep things simple, 1991 birthdate European players will have their final year of draft eligibility in 2012. One example of a player like that taken last weekend was Vancouver 7th rounder Henrik Tommernes who was an August 1990 birthdate.

So I think there's a bit of confusion there with some folks, as a North American player with the same birthdate as Conz would be a free agent but Conz still has another year of eligibility.
Thanks I'm suprise no one drafted this kid yet.

Someone in this thread mentioned that his rebound control isn't that good, and I have to agree with that. I think playing in front of a very defensive and well-coached Swiss team at the WJC helps mask this defect.

Bottom line, he's a smallish guy with good reflexes who's done well against senior competition and in international play, but doesn't have much else going for him as a prospect. He just doesn't project well at all.

Benjamin Conz

Why has this goalie gone undrafted in multiple drafts? There is obviously something wrong with him, but his play in the world juniors has been outstanding. Are teams afraid he won't come over? Is he just not as good as he is percieved to be?

Theres been a ton of threads on him. He's too short among other reasons I'm now forgetting.

Swiss league right now. With the HC Lugano, played 15 games and has a .901 save percentage. I am not sure about his record. His team is in 7th place out of 12 teams.

EDIT: Some posters from Swiss could tell you more and how he has performed.

This game is one of the main reasons many are interested in Conz.

I believe he is 6-5-2 with one shutout.

NHL 11 may be a reason why people know about him, but I am sure the majority of people who keep asking is because of his stellar WJC performances.

I believe he will never see a day playing North American hockey.

He's much too fat and small (Costanza), and is not consistent at all.

Now I dont hate the guy but he is just not a good goalie.

I agree with you to an extent but he moves so quickly and is a great "first shot stopper."

So... It's been a while and I wanna get this kids name back out there.

http://www.gotteron.ch/equipe/fiche-...nplayersdetail[player]=318&tx_teamplayer_gotteronplayersdetail[seasonUid]=28&tx_teamplayer_gotteronplayersdetail[controller]=Player&cHash=49c1049c4f37119c51c7575104b5db8b

He seems to be doing very well back in Switzerland again, I notice he's finally listed at his proper height and weight as well (6'1" 205lbs).

Has he improved his rebound control and does he have a future in North America?

I always remember being told "he's too small" and has no rebound control.

It always bugged me because he was always listed at 5'10" but he was always bigger than that and his rebound control can be worked on pretty easily...

Benjamin Conz - Gottéron (NLA) - Undrafted

Birthyear: 1991-09-13
Age: 21
Birthplace: St. Ursanne, SUI
Position: G
Catches: R
Height: 185 cm / 6'1"
Weight: 93 kg / 205 lbs

I still find it mind numbing this kid is still available as an undrafted free agent at 21 years old... This kid has stood out at the U20's twice already not to mention he's been playing in the top league in his native country of Switzerland since he was 18 years old (Over 160 games).

As we all know, it's a lockout year and a bunch of quality NHLers have gone to play for NLA teams and yet only 1 NHLer is on Conz's team, David Desharnais (Not exactly a star like Kane, Tavares, Seguin, Thornton, Spezza, etc.) and Conz is still having his best season to date, despite being up against better competition than ever before.

In 26 games he's currently maintaining a 2.26GAA with a very impressive .927Save% which puts him 2nd in the league to only Tobias Stephen, a National team regular and former Dallas Stars prospect.

A major concern for Conz back in his first draft eligible year was his size. He's now listed at 6'01" 205lbs. Another major concern was his rebound control. In the World Junior Championships we saw this kid stand on his head for the Swiss team but a lot of people said it's because he kept kicking the puck right onto the sticks of others. From what I've seen and heard, this season Conz has really improved in this area.

I'm now wondering, does this kid have an NHL shot in sight now that he's been given a chance to face some NHL competition and why the hell aren't our Swiss posters talking about this kid daily?

Is he really 6'1" now? I thought he was like 5'10" or something last year.

After seeing Conz have a few amazing performances at the WJC, I expected he'd be drafted, and probably become a solid backup at the least. Really disappointed that no team has given him a chance yet.

Same here. I thought he was the best goalie there, and by a wide margin

We are too busy hyping Genoni and Berra

On a serious note, I'm surprised too. But there are some very talented goaltenders in our league that couldn't make the jump over the sea. But Conz is a special case, since he got some attention in the North American media (together with Nino) as we kicked Russia out of the tournament. But he always seemed a bit inconsistent to me. And he gets overlooked quite often in Switzerland, where Stephan, Genoni, Berra or Flüeler get tons of attention.

But he's playing a spectacular season so far.

Conz is quick and react well to the play, but his coverage of the net is not that great. I guess scouts are afraid that NHL caliber snipers could easily pick up the corners.

Regarding his current season, he's doing fine but still not as good as two years ago. Carrying a bottom team to playoffs is more impressive than compiling good stats for a team ranked third last season.
