I'd say it does. Ben has said they didn't sing Gomes to be a bench/platoon player. You never know though.

If they sign Ross, it mean that Ellsbury will be on the move...

Ross and Gomes have the same strength and weaknesses. Gomes bat might even be better if you consider that he was hitting very good in that graveyard colloseum in Oakland.

Victorino is not a terrible signing. CF = win ; RF = loss. But with JBJ waiting in the wings, he's more than likely a RF-signing, Ellsbury or not.

I have a feeling that's what may happen, with Ellsbury anyhow, and then they'll sign Cody Ross. But we still need pitching!

They're thinking that Victorino can move to center next season after Ellsbury gets his ridiculous $20M/yr and walks as a free agent.

3 years is too long and $39M is too much for a 32 year old who seems to be on the decline. Victorino will bring some speed and he should be solid defensively but he didn't look good last season.

Ross would have been cheaper but he can't play center and he's garbage if he isn't playing at Fenway. Then again, Victorino was garbage no matter where he played last last season.

I love the Victorino signing. First off, it means no Swisher. Second, it's only for 3 years. Since his top skills are defense, speed, and hitting for a decent average, it will not be tough for him to become a reliable bench contributor when Brentz, Bradley, and any other OF prospects come up. The only criticism would be money, but on a short term deal it doesn't hurt, and they have tons of room below the luxury tax threshold.

You are probably right but the logic escapes me. They are so afraid of spending $20m a year on a far superior player that they'll pay a far inferior player $13m a year to step in for him and suck?

I assume the real fear is the term for Ells, but you can't start overpaying mediocre players by 35% to solve your newfound phobia of long term deals. That's not going to work.

The lineup is fine. Plenty of hitting and running to win. Now it is time to focus on pitching, because lord knows we don't have much of that.

I bet we have a similar offer out to Kyle Lohse.

Don't see how this Victorino signing is the end of the world. He's a better player than Ross.

As far as Escobar, that actually might not be a bad move to make if they can get him for mid level prospects. He cant hit for a SS, and it would be much better than watching Iglesias bat every night

Ken Rosenthal‏@Ken_Rosenthal

Sources: #Indians’ offer to Victorino was 4 yrs, $44 million. Evidence of their flexibility. Victorino got $2M per yr more from #RedSox.

So the Sox signed him for $5 million less, and out of the contract a year earlier. Exactly what I want the Sox to be doing. Beating out other teams for the players they want on short high AAV contracts.

To make matters even worse, doesn't he wear the helmet with two ear flaps? That's akin to wearing a turtleneck or neck guard in hockey.

God I hate everything about this.

Even if those players are mediocre at best?

I'm not a high paid GM, my opinion of players doesn't equate to wins. I want the Sox to get the players they want on short contracts, and hope they build a winning team in doing so.

Victorino is a nice clubhouse/glue-guy...guy. But he is atrocious at the plate when it comes to selection. I got tired of everyone in Philly complaining about it. It's not a long-term deal, and money is something of an object. I hope the plan isn't to stick him at the top of the order, he's a 6-hitter on a good day.
